I am looking for a pair of softer fins, up until recently I was set on grara ld's but I came across mares razor fins and they look interesting. There are two models so I wanted to find out whether anyone knows more about these fins and how they (both razor pro and razor) compare to the gara ld's in terms of stiffness, comfort, etc.

Hello C,
I can't offer you any information regarding the mares razors, but I can tell you that the Gara 3000LD are some of the best plastic bladed fins you can buy. Especially for the price. I originally bought them for cold water because I had 2000HF and they were like boards when they hit the 53 degree water. But the 3000ld's are excellent in a wide range of water temperatures, you just need to adjust your kicking technique if you are going from say, 53 degrees in the ocean to pool train in 70-80 degree water. But, they spring back to shape very well, have a progress stiffness going from footpocket to tip, and are very efficient for any diving in the range of 25m. Depending on your feet, the footpockets are very nice as well. I have skinny feet so the Cressi pockets are excellent. I actually just bought another pair to wear with either barefoot or with a very thin sock. The other pair is sized larger to fit a 3-5mm sock. Hopefully someone will chime in with some insight regarding the mares razor's. But thats my 2 cents about the 3000LD's. Good luck!

I don't know exactly how the mares vs the cressis would compare in stiffness however, you have an advantage with the mares due to the removal of the blades appose to those of the cressis. Further more I hear plastic blades tend to stiff up in cold water perhaps you should clarify this with people who dive in colder waters because I am not 100% sure on it even though it has been said before.

Hey guys, I am copying a post from another forum. This is from Dave Hochman who is a national spearfishing competitor. A very accomplished spearfisherman. I value his opinion about product very much. He is responding to another persons post about why is Mares making the same @#$! as Sporasub. Pretty funny considering most of it is quite different. Anyhow, this is the best I can come up with for now. I'm sure we'll see much more feedback in short time.

I apologize for high jacking your thread but your previous statement was way off. I cant vouch for the new suites or guns because I havent seen them yet. I do have the new fins and if they are any representation of the new line Mares will have some great gear. Hear is what I found after a quick swim.

I will personal vouch for these new Mares fins as being one hell of a design. The ones I used where the Mares Pro Razor and they are nothing like the sporasub fins. The new Mares Razor has several different features. The blade shape for one is completely different. The foot pocket is very comfortable yet stiff enough to maintain power. Also, the side rail is now clipped to the blade so they will not let go of the blade, and yes they still have a removable blade but it is a much better design.

I am good sized person and I require a stiff powerful fin, the Black Mares Pro Razor is all that. Very powerful with perfect snap. The blade felt like it was molded to my foot. I was able to swim at high speed with a slow effortless stroke. I cant Waite to try this design in carbon. It should be a great deep water fin with a ton of push. I had the feeling that the Mares Pro Razor had as much power as my previous favorite fin, the Carbon Pures. I will have to get into the open water to see if that last statement is true, but If they are what I think they are, then this design with the carbon blades will be just plain "SICK"!

Again scubadown16, I apologize for high jacking your thread.

Dave

The Razor Pro are medium/stiff (theoretically comparable to Cressi gara 3000 or Omer Millennium Comp) while the Razor are medium/soft (theoretically comparable to Cressi 3000 LD or Omer Millennium Grey).
You will be hard pressed to find someone who has tried them yet, cause these new products are just starting to arrive from factory. (b.t.w. I have ordered the new mares "Apnea" float for myself but the store says this will take two weeks to wait).

Thanks guys, it's pretty much what I wanted to find out. So i guess the pros might be a bit too stiff for the type of fin I am looking for, regular razors might be a better option and as armandozx said the good thing is that the blades are interchangeable. Do you think they're worth it or should I just stick to garas which have proven to be an excellent fin? I know it's the choice I'll have to be making my self in the end, but I value your opinions as more experienced spearos and it would be good to see what you guys think.

FYI,

The Razor and Razor Pros are available now.

Best to all,

Zak

Next month the Mares Razor Pro Carbon may be available at SCUBAStore. Has anyone heard any reviews about this fin?
