Need some tips on how to seal my mask better with a beard/mustache? I'm normally clean shaved, but grew a short beard/mustache a couple weeks ago. I was freediving (taking level-1 Fii next weekend) and spearing all day today and my mask was leaking - not horrible, but definitely annoying. Any tips or should I just shave it? Taking my level-1 freediving course next weekend and want to avoid the leak if possible.

I shave up on my cheeks where the mask makes contact. Even a little hair will break the seal. For my moustache under my nose I apply a thick amount of "food grade" silicon grease. This is stiffer than vaseline and stays in place better.

Thanks for the advice guys! Yeah the Vaseline/grease does make a lot of sense actually......will be trying that for sure! Hopefully this, along with shaving cheeks, does the trick since I actually like the beard.

Fingers crossed that I make it to 66ft this weekend during the Fii course!

I've found silicon gel works well, is less annoying, and is supposedly easier on masks, than vasoline. Most dive shops have it.

Thanks H. I'm stopping by a freedive shop later today and will pick some up. I trimmed/shaved just below my nose and put some Chapstick lip balm on - all I had - and it seemed to work a little. Masked leaked less..... Thx all again!

Had to make an account just to answer this question because I just had it answered successfully for the first time in 5 years of diving. Up until now I've used nasty vaseline and mustache wax unreliably without satisfying results.. The trick is to take a straight razor or equivalent and shave off a tiny strip of hair from under your nose as smoothly as you can, it doesn't even need to be visible, just a thin line. Since this is the only part of the mask that makes a seal on the upper lip.

I tried this by shaving off tiny bits of hair until I got the mask to stick to my face like glue, it was a life changing moment for me, truly.

Hope you have the same luck.

Thanks Andrew! After little success with the the grease like u mention I did try shaving below my nose. What a difference!! I can now keep the beard;).
