So I am traveling from Oregon in a couple of weeks and staying near Napili Bay.
I have not free-dived in Maui and am wondering:
what to bring

can I hunt and if so what for?

where to go?

Do I need a license?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Shmity

We stayed in Napili point five weeks ago. It was amazing. Now I'll start not answering your question.... We stayed at the point and stayed in Honokeana cove swimming with the turtles for the most part. We also went over the beach to the north (Napili beach). That's where all the tourists were. The water right around there is very shallow. I saw only a couple of guys spearing. They said they just went out to the third reef. I saw a fair number of spearable fish, alas I had no gun... With a half lung dive you can make all the bottoms in the area.
The local dive shops (snorkel bob's and Boss Frog's) seem to cater to snorkelers rather than hunters. If you can, take a drive up the coast about 20 minutes to the state park (Honolua Bay I think). The beach is "protected" by some pretty significant stairs and limited parking. But the water is amazing and the coral is awesome.
You might have to go into Lahaina to find a larger dive shop. Lahaina is where most of the tour and dive boats seem to launch from.

Have a blast!!!
