THE 'Old Man Dave' Fish of the Month, Specimen Hunt and
'Crustacean Cup' COMPETITIONS 2013

This year the OMD FOM trophy will be a beautifully shaped trophy with the name of the winner engraved. These are hand-made by our very own spearo MIRROR [send him some rep!], with the kind help of venturesports/spearfishingstore.co.uk who will sponsor a prize at the end of the year.

We will run the Fish of the Month [FOM] in the same way as previous years; we will also run a separate Specimen Hunt [SH] competition over the course of the year.

In this thread, please only post your entries for the FOM competition.

Comments can be posted here - FOM/SH discussion thread for 2013

The poll will be added on the 1st of each following month and will run for five days.

Please read the rules below before posting an entry.

FOM Rules:
1. The entrant must have posted five times at, or before, the last day of the previous month to the current competition.
2. Entries to be accompanied by a photo containing a newspaper or magazine dated on the day of the catch; the date is to be clearly legible.
3. All legal species are included, local minimum size limits should be observed.
4. Entries must be posted by 09:00 on the first day of the following month of the competition.
5. Winners will be chosen by a poll. In the event of a draw the first entry posted will be declared the winner.
6. Voting will last for five days after the poll opens.
7. Multiple entries are allowed, but only one entry per person can be forwarded for the poll.
8. More than twenty entries will be shortlisted to twenty by the db staff.
9. Catches to be weighed in pounds and ounces.
10. The FOM & SH will run from March to October, inclusive.
11. All decisions made by db staff are final.

Specimen Hunt [SH] additional rules:
12. The winner of the specimen hunt competition will be the spearo with the most percentage points accumulated over the year. Details of how points will be awarded are given below.
13. To enter the SH, the fish should be entered in the FOM as above, and it should be clearly stated that the fish is also for entry into the Specimen Hunt.
14. ONLY the fish species given in the table below, which meet the minimum size requirements given in the table, may be counted in the SH: 16 species to try for.
15. In the case of a draw, a poll will be run to decide the winner by public vote.
16. SH Points are awarded as follows:
fish #% = [a X d] + b ['a' multiplied by 'd' then add 'b']
score % = (fish X% + fish Y% + fish Z% + etc) / number of fish of that species entered:
a: % points for fish weight as a percent of the "Specimen Fish Weight"
b: % points for catch report [awarded at the discretion of the DB staff].
d : multiplier: the first fish of a species entered is worth 1 x the above 'fish #%' points; subsequent fish of the same species added to the SH may be counted but will be subject to a multiplier of x 0.7 . These will then be averaged with the first fish score to produce the % score for that specimen.
Please note the larger minimum size requirements given in the SH table.
Please note that a good catch report/contribution on the forum will be rewarded as part 'b' above.

Bass 6lb 7oz FOM entry please.
Night dive capture in 3ft of water with no skill involved whatsoever, shot without even getting my head wet!

Headed out to west bay to be met by zero vis :(. So searched the locality for a better option. We found 0.5-1m vis and decided to go for it. We swam in 2-3ft if water just to see the bottom! It was very hard to fucus, the water was freezing and Alan and I were close to bailing out....but we decided to swim nearly 2 miles!!! Wgen suddenly I spot a nice silver bar, but he spotted me to and headed out to sea, I popped my head outa the murk to see where alan was (as not to shoot him) then just seen a glimpse of the tail disapearing into the murk, I shot from above and in front of where I figured it would go.....boom! Gun tears from my hand and off goes my float. Result a nice healthy 6lb 7oz bass capured using my picasso gun.

Gilthead bream 3lb 3oz
Night capture
FOM and SPECCI COMP please

Another awsome dive.

I hooked up with my duve buddy Nobby; he's not been able to get in much recently due to a new baby. And I seem to have lady luck on my side at the moment.

I wanted to try a completely new spot, bit of a risk? But it's paid off lately as ive hit a different spot every dive the past month. Also it was a good hour drive from Nobby's house; but he was still keen.

Got to spot and vis looked good. Worked the beachand reef for an hour and nothing worth taking. Decided on a marathon 2 mile swim Slowly hunting as went 2 hours of absolutely NOTHING was about to Give up, then I see a glimpse of very very skitish fast moving silver; could it be what I was after? So I slowed down to a snail pace snd swam another 20 Yards and there was another deep chrome fish, blunt head and wearing a gold gilted crown......."yes" it was.....I nailed it with my picasso gun!!!!!!!
3lb 3oz gilthead bream.

We went on further....when suddenly I see a huge tail! Take aim but notice that Nobbyhad already lined up on it, so I lower my gun.
..boom!!!!! OMG what a fish for Nobby! Really.....this fish is awsome. I wil let him post up. I will leave you all with a pic of my gilthead bream.

Well done to my dive buddy nobby!!

WHITE BREAM 1.084kg

Day capture

Ineligible for species comp ......so entry for FOM and HOF only.

Diving about 9-10m Jerseys south west coast, this Bream went under a large rock. I spent 5 or 6 dives trying to get in position to shoot it . I could see it moving but it could also see me and it kept moving out of view behind other rocks. Eventually it showed sufficiently to allow a clean shot.

Weighed soon after capture it on my basic scales I thought it might just be over the British record but when I later weighed it on calibrated digital scales (at a Butchers) it was just 6grams under the current record of 1.09kg.

PLAICE 3lb 10oz

Day capture

Entry for Species comp. This is my second plaice entered for SH and it is only about 6oz heavier than my first entry so pretty sure that this will not increase percentage, but it is a very nice fish for local waters , so just had to enter it.

Diving Jerseys south coast, mostly shallow reef hunting, plaice and sole. Most of the fish I found were found on the reefs and under kelp/weed. This was the best one of the dive.

Plaice 4lb 1oz ........getting bigger.

Entry for species comp. Day caught

Please disregard my previous 3lb 10 and replace with this lovely 4lb 1oz beaut.

Diving with Dan on Jerseys south west coast. Vis looked poor, only 1m in shallows but on the bottom in 6-8m opend up to 5m vis. No bass seen so diverted to hunt for plaice. Found this one under some jap weed in about 7m. Also caught a nice chancre crab (brown crab) of 2lb 11 and another plaice over 3lb.
