Hi! I'm off to Dahad next week for some scuba and I'm also taking a freediving course.

So i'm looking for a computer that suits both these purposes. I am choosing between a Suunto D4i or a scubapro Meridian. Which one is the best choice in your opinion?

I haven't seen freediving related reviews of the Meridian, so if someone has info please share!

Honestly I cannot say anything about the Meridian.

But I've seen and/or tested quite a few freediving computers with or without scuba mode (like D4, Aeris F10, Mares Nemo, Galileo) and the D4 beat them all except maybe for the Galileo but that one is in a completely different price range.

The F10 comes close in freediving with some advantages over the D4 and some disadvantages but as it has no scuba mode you can forget it anyway.

So from my own experience I can really recommend a D4(i) which I use, too.

I used to own a D4 and currently use a Meridian. I recommend the D4 based purely on the user interface. The Meridian's is just very poorly executed. It's full of features, but they're just overly complex to use and some are just not configurable enough (HRM, for instance).

F10 works great and you dont need to pay a quarter of the cost of the watch every time the battery needs changing like the Suuntos. :naughty

I tested Meridian - it is an excellent computer, with the most functions any computer offers, good quality, good looking, and you can change the batteries yourself. Its problem is that you really have to read the manual several times to find out how to work with it. It is often very difficult and not at all inutitive to find some of the functions. But once you take the time to learn it, and get used to the incosistent navigation in submenus, it is rather easy, and well worth of it. The other problem is indeed the very poor PC software. However, there is a hope that the next version of the log manager will be much better. It cannot be worse, which already is a good starting position. And even if they do not offer any better update, I am sure established 3rd party software vendors of diving managers (for example Diving Log or Mac-Dive) will support Meridian soon too.

Can you see the temperature or the time when it's in dive mode?

Hm, it is almost a year I have tested it, so do not remember for sure. The manual tells you can see the temperature, day time, and other values in dive mode, on the alternate screen after pressing the UP button, but I am not really sure if it works in the Apnea mode too. I have the feeling that only the heart rate value alternated with the max depth, but I can be easily wrong. If nobody other posts the answer, I'll look at it in a week or a two when I see a friend who has the Meridian.

Aladin G2 is not mentioned as an option?
Any reason - is it not for sale anymore - just mention it when looking at the comp list from Trux the only downside is that it's not very sexy to wear out to the pub - important, but not going to worry me in the water.

Is it just my uneducated way of looking at thing or is it a real contender for best combined scuba/freedive comp?

Thanks

Gav
