Merlin (yes its his real name) Cadogan is appearing in the heats of TVs Britains Got Talent. The heats are currently being shown on Saturday evenings, but Merlins showing should be either 25 April or 1st June, I suppose we just have to sit tight and wait. He is a magician escapologist and a new member of The British Freediving Association.

Merlin has developed an entertaining act that relies on a fair level of underwater breatholding (not to be confused with David Blaine and other 'fake' attempts at breaking world records). Merlins apnea requirements are just a part of his act and its the things he does whilst holding his breath that create the jaw dropping moments.

Merlin has recognised that his current acts and further acts that he might design in the future will require specialised apnea training, hense his approaching and joining the BFA. I have spent some time with him and can say that he is a very likeable fellow (a cross between Marcus Greatwood and Martyn Jones). His current breatholding ability is much as any other fit and motivated but untrained person.

It must be tough doing what he does with the adrenalin of his act, on camera and in serious competition, whilst having to contend with back stage protocols rather than settling into a good warm up routine.

It must also be tough for his style of entertainment to actually win the whole thing, but I wouldnt be surprised to see him progress within the competition, in his category.

Stay tuned and Stay Wet.

Just heard from Merlin, still dont know which Saturday he is on. He has been working through some excercises that I have given him and some tables. He has gone from 3 to 4 minute statics, so some real improvement. He says he is just beginning to recognise the struggle phase at around 3 minutes. I suppose at least he is able to recognise whats going on, it seems to me there will be a lot left in the tank after a few more weeks training and I wouldnt be surprised if he is at 5 minutes by the time he gets to do his real performance............I still think though, it will be a bit like a dynamic in the amount of o2 he gets through when performing than compared to a static, and that will probably confuse him.
