Any divers interested in diving this sat aug 26 at Milwaukee at Atwater Beach Jon has posted some good pics from diving there in the past .

I can't make it, but let me help you out with a little info.

Atwater beach is just north of Milwaukee in the town of Shorewood- at the end of Capitol Drive.

There is some parking there and they may, or may not, charge you to enter the beach area- it changes all the time depending upon who is working.

You can see the stairway that you need to walk down, which is much nicer than the path that used to be there 20 years ago! Once you get down to the beach you'll notice three large jetties, look at the picture, and a very small steel pier just to the north.

IF you want to dive the Josephine, 100' long set of rubs and a keel in less than 10' of water, walk up to the little steel pier and take a 90 degree compass heading straight out- you can probably see some of it if you stand on the end of the pier.

If you want to dive the much bigger wreck, Appomattox, you'll need to take a 60 degree compass heading off of the large jetty that is furthest to the north- left hand side of the beach. ;) On scuba it's about 400 kick cycles, but if you freediving it you can just snorkel out until you see it. That wreck lies in 18'-23' of water and comes up off the bottom a good 6'-8'. She's over 300' long and at least 60' wide. I have seen salmon and other big fish swim into this area on past dives. I believe that it is now marked with a state buoy.

Have fun!

Jon

Jon thanks for the maps and compass bearings maybe someone will see this post and show up on sat or maybe i should stand out by the nearest scuba shop and hand out tracks in hopes converting the local scuba people. I also want you to know i dry land apeiniced 431 yesterday painful at the 3.5 mark started to have move around not sure if this would disqualify if this was a pool event. I just read article on telivision being a natural pain killer for childern iam sure glad i had a WW2 documentry on when i hit the 431.I have cleaned my act up gone vegitarian no cigars or junk food still however drink a gallon of coffee a day doing apneic walking running stairs at work and calistenics hope i can keep this up and some day be as good as you Jon thanks again Rob

Congrats on the big jump in your static!

It's a good thing to give up the cigars, but the no junk food or meat sounds like one of those "extreme" Eric Fattah diets!rofl Good luck with it anyway. ;)

Have you tried to email Toller? He lives right in that area and might be able to go with you? You may also want to check out the weather before you go. Lake Michigan is much more susceptible to weather than the inland lakes.

Atwater was great today good vis warm water enjoyed the 300ft.keel of the sunken ship bouy made it easy to locate the family enjoyed slumming around the neighborhood i also found the lake to be of some size the water was noted to be cool and refreshing to my thirst i heard roto virus is good for developing good ability in handling contractions along with building a strong abdominal wall. I wished i had speargun there was oppurtunity to spear seagulls and a loud mouthed Canadian goose. I found atwater beach with no problems this is a rarity thanks again Jon for the good directions . I have enclosed pictures of todays trip also a few pictures from Devils lake.

Rob,

No photos came through?

I heard that water temps are running 71F degrees down to 110' lately. After that it drops into the 50's but vis climbs to over 100'!

Sorry I couldn't make it today, but I'm game for diving somewhere next weekend.

Jon
