Hello Wisconsin, Chicago area spearos,

I'm in Milwaukee and was wondering if anybody has any spearfishing/freediving weekend trips planned in the area. If not, let's plan one!!

I haven't spearfished this area before so it would help if some of you that know the area better would be willing to get together some weekend. I have only spearfished in the Mediterranean.

Cheers

Detari,

Hello from Chicago. Only fish you can spear in IL are rough fish like carp. I'm only interested in hunting what I can eat so I'm looking for a carp connoisseur who can teach me how to clean and cook carp first. If I like it, then I'll hunt them. There's a good site called chicagolandfishing.com with a forum for carp bowhunters but they're not spearfishermen. So for now I basically just site-see in Lake Michigan and look at bass and other fish I can't hunt. If that appeals to you, you're welcome to join us out here. If you want to hunt pan fish, WI is the place for you and you should be able to find plenty of buddies there.

BTW, where in the Med did you dive?

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I think the same way (only hunt the fish I will eat) and I have no idea what carp or fish in the WI lakes taste like, but I have heard it's good.
If you and other spearos ever get a weekend trip in some of the lakes around here please let me know.

In the Med I speared in several places in southern Albania and a few Greek islands (Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini).

I'll probably be heading out somewhere in Lake Michigan this weekend...I'm also going tomorrow with a friend. I only have a canoe so I'm limited to one guest onboard at a time - But we could always drive to Racine or Kenosha & head out from the shore! Do you have your own stuff or gear to use? Lake Michigan can be REALLY cold...Even in August...It all depends upon wind direction. Everything in Lake Michigan depends on wind direction...Even the water clarity.

I mainly polespear - I don't even own a speargun - Obviously you need a Wisconsin fishing license to spear fish - and only pan-fish and rough fish are allowed.

If you'd be interested we could meet At the South Shore Yacht Club on Saturday at 9:30

Again though, I only have a canoe though and MAY already be Taking Jon from deeperblue out Saturday. We could always go to Racine or Kenosha then & just meet up -

It may be far for some, but I've finned out to the rocks - Through the gap & hunted...I then finned back to the shore at south shore before. Its a good workout!

Hello Bgill,

I'd definitely be interested, but this weekend I am tied up in Chicago.

I have the gear for underwater spearing, though my wetsuit is only 5mm thick and the speargun is 65cm (kinda short) but I think it should be ok.

I don't mind going to Racine or the surrounding areas, or swimming from shore. Is Lake MI fish edible/tasty?

Next weekend will be fine for me, maybe even on a weekday afternoon if we can match the times.

Cheers,

Detari
