I have been thinking............. never a good thing! When you look at old photos of spearfishers, surfers and other watermen they all seem to look like Greek Gods, a part of me cant help but think that the equipment used back then was generally heavier and/or less efficient, meaning that physicality and ability was more important than it is now, as a talking point do you think that men aren't what they used to be and that we have an over reliance on technology OR do you think that new technology should be embraced for an easier and safer life? Just a random thought, the scene in Jaws springs to mind when Quint is rambling on about not finding a decent man under 60 or some such thing! :D how the mind wanders!

....have you recently felt the urge of buying a porsche ?....
i am pretty much an old school guy when it comes to equipment. swam years after years, miles after miles with the same
old cressi gara plastic fins. Cant say how much pairs i bought over the years.
Today i am so happy using my carbonfins. while getting older i apreciate the advantage of using more sophisticated gears.
back then, i didnt know better and compensated the use of old school gears simply with physical strenght and condition.
i am still looking like a greek god though....but with less hair on my head:smuggrin:

buying a Porsche................ anyone would think I'm in the middle of a mid life crisis and that would be silly, love to type more but late for the hang gliding :D Sometimes I think too much and the thought just came to me, how about using the same fins for everything, so with that in mind I have decided to use my Kiefer long swim fins for all my diving, bodyboarding and swimming, for the hell of it really, there is no chance of looking like Poseidon, I haven't looked like a Greek God since I was married, strange that, must be a coincidence :D p.s totally with you on the hair thing and have you noticed that the more hair you loose, the more you seem to bang your head, one of Gods little jokes I think!

My head gets bloody darn near every work day. There is still some hair up there, but not much.

The greek god thing. Interesting observation, keep thinking. On mulling it over, your observation matches mine. I suspect it has to do more with the type of people ( young and very athletic) who would have been attracted to diving when it was a new sport.

This thread caused me to go looking for evidence that I was ever a Greek God. The oldest diving photo I can find shows me in 1953 at age 14. I wasn't exactly a God, but I hadn't matured yet. In the second photo from Hawaii it was probably about 1962 when I was 23. Not exactly Godlike, but I was pretty fit. These days I don't permit photos with my wetsuit off.

The changes over time have been important and technology plays in our favor.
