Aloha,

I will be traveling with my Finis Competitor monofin via airplane, and I wondered if any other members have had luck with purchasing a hard-sided case to house it?

The fin is 35 x 25 x 10 . . . irregular size for a suitcase or even a dive bag. I have a soft monofin case, but it won't protect the blade enough for airline travel.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I am considering a hard plastic bike case after seeing triathletes with them in Kona. Perfect for a monofin case if one was really serious. They are around $300 and weigh around 30lbs. You can also throw clothes and gear in it with your monofin as well. Something to consider.

Wow, Delfino, thank you! A bicycle case is a brilliant idea, one I hadn't considered. The REI one is the perfect size and weight. I will check my local bike shop to see if they sell something similar.

Mahalo for your time and advice!

I've always used the cardboard box it came in with lots of Fragile stickers on it. Zero problems.

Here's how I pack my fins, using some of the original packaging from when they shipped from the Ukraine, plus cardboard. The whole cardboard wrapped package then goes in my mono-bag. The last picture depicts one of the many challenges I face getting ready for a competition.

That does look like an effective way to package gear! Looks like someone does not approve of you leaving though ;-)

Box works well - the trick is to secure the blade - particularly the corners.

Happy Mermaiding! See you in the blue!

Here's a case design I have developed, it's on the same principle as Jenny's one a bit more convenient.

There are a few around now with me having made them for a number of people. Not particularly hi-tech, a hardware shop would probably cut the ply out for you if you make them a pattern. A canvas shop should be able to sew up a cover pretty economically. There is a shoulder strap (on other side) similar to that on a standard mono bag.
