Well its come to the crunch! well the crack actuallu, have been looking to buy another fin for a while but havent really neeb to rushed.

BUT

after the first swim of tonights training session ended in me snapping my Triton Hyper fin beyond repair i am now in urgent need of a new fin.

Egypt in a little over 3 months a no fin to train with leading up to my max dive attempts when i get there.

so need some good educated help on this:

Hyperfin for performance deep diving and a bit of Dynamic focus is on depth.

short list:
- Rocketfin
- Tropol??? but dont think the freediving version is available yet
- Glide (dont realy want one but it may have to do)
- ??????

will have to order soon as without my fin training kinda comes to a grinding hault as far as technique and deep dives are concerned.

Glides are pretty good, probably a safer bet than the others because you know what you're getting wrt blade stiffness and footpocket sizing. Mine is better than my hyperfin was. But then, there are good and bad hyperfins...

Hi DD what about your omer stingrays do they have soft blades?!?!?!?
If you waterway ask them for the 30 degree version

????? stingrays? yei still have them but they arent a monofin thats for sure and have a completly different purpose.

you dont use bifins to train for a monofin max attempt dive same as you dont practice for a car race with a boat???????

i need a monofin for my deep training and also to focus on my fin and body position during the glide phase. but thats another story.

as far as a 30 degree fin is conserned i'm not sold on this amount of angle yet.... mind you depends on where you take the measurement from. at the instep, from the toes or from the heel these will all give you different blade position at 30 degrees, getting the fin parrallel with the leg during the glide is the important part and this is dependant on the flexibility of the diver, i know that if a couple of divers on here (watts) put on a 30degree fin the fin would almost be facing the other way! so fin angle is dependant on both where to measure from and the ankle flexiblilty.

Tropol for example measure from the instep and there 15 degree blade has very similar angle characteristics to to my 24degree triton fin.

have you actually used a 30 degree Glide?

Mulline is your current fin a 30 glide? where is the angle measured from on the WW glide fins.

DD

just wanted to hear an input about the stingrays I dunno but maybe I will buy one of those if they have soft blades
I guess I was kind of asking about the blades

you will fin that even 30 is litle you will see I also have one of the triton new monofins it's absolutely great except for the glue and angle it's mpt enough and bending your knees is like trying to your car with half handbrake pressed xD

stingrays are bifins? not mono....

not gonna discuss the 30 degree angle thing to be honest, average persons angle of deviation between foot and leg is 26 degrees so why we would have to go beyond a straight fin confuses me, in theory that would mean if the true effective angle of the blade is 30 degrees it would be past inline with the leg and would be going beyond causing drag "hand brake" as you put it in the other direction, there are plenty of divers who can have perfectly straight legs and fin with a shallow angle blade, i'll take some images for you next time i dive with Watts. 19 degree fin almost perfectly in line.

not sure if your trying to be annoying or its just accidental but that last post almost seems like your trying to stir something???

DD

I no that they here bifins but using the bi word here could get a millions post wining that Iwas how wrong post but I saw u are available right know could resist to ask you on the spot

and the 30 degree thing: you will stiff your body a lot to straight your ankles with an average 20/ degree fin or with a triton
I can go straight with my triton but is not relaxaing your comfort o2 preservation takes a lot :S
the more comfort more the fun , the more better the fin gets

but I said it wouldn't be enough because a lot of already said that but 30º is enough a litle flex in foot won't kill anyone

For deep diving a 30 degrees isn't as important because on the way up your stroke is continues, unless you are Kerian Hibs.

What angle was your Triton fin?

Because of your time constraint Hyperfins is out of the question.
Haven't you got an older fin? Maybe borrowing a fin is an option?

At the moment I'm tired so forgive my limited help.

Mine's a 30 degree Glide. I can get the top of my foot in line with my shin, but still need the extra angle on the blade to be streamlined.

hmm interesting Mullins, food for thought thats for sure, you have a VERY long glide phase in your dynamics.... still one of the most remarkable dynamics i have seen, almost looks like you arent moving at all, how do you find the kick part of the stroke is it still easy to transfur power to the fin and have the blade move properly, i always thought that a fin with such angle would be challanging to drive efficiently.

Yeah Kars i have a Triton monofin (like model 2) but i dont like it really, too stiff for me but it'll have to do temperarily for traininguntil i get a new fin, but i still need to order very quickly so that the fin arrives within 6 weeks..... thats about how long it takes for me to recieve fins it would seem from the Ukraine then get accustomed to it before heading to Dahab and Crete, so havent got much time really and there is no way i'm gonna restrict myself for my first trip to dahab with my triton mono which isnt right for me, thats for sure. unfortunatly i'm the only (was the only) person with a Hyper style fin that will fit me within 2000km so no chance of borrowing one for training or to take away.

Updates so far:
- Tropol M5F no chance development postponed even further than they expected so probably no fins available in reality till late this year. damn!

- Rocketfin: these guys have been most helpful answering my meriod of questions some things i can understnad others i can not. but they are most helpful.

- glide havent bothered looking into yet, particularly now that i know what i know about rocket hint VERRY similar blades they use... along with Triton aswell........

- Leaderfins Hyper Deep Pro may make the list but dont know enough about them, will have to talk to Mr Hibbs i think????

Actually for deep diving I like to have a stiffer blade for deep dives; I'm considering the beginning and the way up more like a modest sprint exercise, than a below medium power dynamic. I can recall a dive with a WW classic MD1 - Long distance to 40m, and when I turned it was very easy to overpower the fin, resulting in not much movement up. It was more like a towel on my legs So I needed to shift over to a much more gradual force build up avoiding the fin's limit.

Now with my Natalia Hyperfins fin, 30 degrees fairly soft blade too, I did not run into this problem yet at depth, but I must say I dive without weights and wear only a 3mm suit now as opposed to the soft 5mm and 3kg in the previous example.

In regard to your current training -triton- situation, I suggest you practice 50m+ sprints; or even FRC sprints. This will help to get a nice burning going, strengthen you muscles, build up that extra mass that you're going to use in egypt. - Make sure you eat right after training enough carbs and protein.

Personally because of it's design I'm looking forward to the new tropol model, I think it's going to be my next fin.

I do more than half my training in duck-fins, so I don't think that being mono-less will be too much of a problem. You're forced to adopt better technique with little fins anyway.

Get a rocketfin and let us all know how it goes

thanks Mullins, just let ME be the guinnie pig! hahahahaha.

the last 2 months of been exclusivley little rubber duck fins, doing alot of surface dolphin kick work on front and back. but also pinful amounts of none stop laps just flutter kick which deswtroys your legs, the pain is crazy, and now ding vertical dolphin kick on the spot for 1m at a time with very short recorvery time arms up in the air,its killing me! i agree it isnt the end of the world just bloody frustrating and makes my deep dive training on the weekends alot more difficult ( my major issueis EQ and pressure attaptation) technique and breath hold are still more than fins, so back to frc dives to 20m or so in little fins i guess. and FRC hangs to try and emulate the pressure. looks like there will be 3-4 of us in Australia trying the rocketfins very soon so hopefully they suit freediving as well as they do finswimming because they seem to be taking the finswimming market by storm.

I love my Tropol M4 for depth. It is back in the shop now for an update (offered by Tropol ) - but certainly has held up better than any fin I've used.
For competition you would want a smaller footpocket than I have - relative to your foot - for better force. The stiff blade is great for depth. - I have been using my oldest Triton in the pool lately and I like the softer blade for dynamic - as well as the angle - which must be => 23 degrees.

I will say I did a few repairs on this fin before I finally cleaned the blade and reglued the footpocket front - which is now holding quite well. My other Triton is made in a different way and has had no problems with blade separation. Max really improved his construction technique. That fin has tighter pockets though - better force transmission - but pain after 20 minutes or so. Also stiffer blade.

I would not shy away from buying another fin from him.

hmmm the triton that broke was the early model not the later ones which look like they have a waterway blade.

i was very surprised to find that there was no reinforcement running across the blade under the footpockets the reduce the chance of breakage, since i purchased this fin over time the V bend has gotten noticably worse with age to a point before it broke when it was VERY noticable in the water.

of the 6 fins i have imported into australia for people 3 of them have failed to breakages and one delamination and i have also recently heard of another Triton in australia where the footpockets have quite literally fallen off the fin! and all of these fins (accept mine) are the "new" fins, waterWay looking blade.the fins are beautiful to use in the water no complaints there but the build quality is now my concern, most of these fins are less than 6months old with acception again of mine being a little over a year old.

so a little dissapointed, Max has been willing to listen to the issues but nothing has been resolved other than him saying that he can make me another one.... it will be better this time. not really a risk i am willing to take when it costs so much for a fin.

so time to change to another brand.

i already contacted tropol mecause my first choice was the M5f but unfortunatley they outlined in their email to me that it will not be available for even longer than they expected... so probably not till the end of 2010. unfortunatly i do not have the luxury of waiting that long for a fin i need one at the latest landed in australia by April. so i can use it a little bit before heading over to Egypt in May.

I hear ya. I've not had the problem with the newer ones. Max makes the blades. My first fin does have a fair amount of V bend - the latter two (one for my daughter) have none at all and are made from different fiberglass. I rate those two very high on performance - but low on comfort ( a pretty common compromise in the world of monofins). Its a real drag these things have to be shipped so far.

I'll say straight up that the Tropol is in a different class than anything else I've seen in terms of comfort and durability. The stuff they use in the footpockets is a whole different animal. The blade is beautiful. With low power it has a sort of ')' (really less than that) bend but when you crank on it theres none of that. Very nice blade. Mine are size 45-46 - and there is some slop in the pockets without socks, Also the fin is fairly heavy. I wrote a really extensive review which will be posted at some point. Only downside is blade angle - and my fin has a hard blade which is not the best for dynamic. I'm sending you a pm

My Triton has started to fall apart again. this time it's the rubber layers in the back of the foot pocket that are starting to separate. the inner foot pocket and the outer foot reinforcements are splitting. I assume that this is due to the glue that he is using. I went and re-glued all of the areas and have it working again, but am a little put off that the thing splits apart because of an oversight in something as basic as the glue.

My fin has been getting a fair bit of use lately (3-4 days a week in the pool and every other weekend in the ice water that we dive in), but not so much that it should be splitting along major seems.

I wonder if this binary glue Tropol sent me would work better than superglue. It sure holds up on the Tropol. I think Superglue is just too brittle - particularly with all the temp changes are fins are subjected too. I used the Gel type of superglue on my Older Tropol and it has held quite well where the top piece connects to the blade - even though the rubber along the sides is starting to break down.

I've even considered trying drywall glue!
