monster tuna headshot !!!monster!!!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Is it just me or does anyone else think he shot that fish inside a net???

yeah i was wondering about that i have never seen some one come so close to a fishing boat before you would think the folks on the fishing boat would get pissed off but i think primarily tuna is long lined not netted dont quote me on that as im not sure

If he was inside the net he is a total moron. Can't think of much that is scarier than seeing a several thousand square foot net bearing down on me while I'm diving. I imagine that someone who does this type of spearing would be experienced enough to know what's safe and what's not though.

Well it is possible to know a captain of a fishing boat. And it is possible to dive inside the net. As long as the net is not beeing pulled. However it does not look like they are in the net at all.

This is how I think the story played. The guys got a message from someone at the fishing boat, saying there is alot of large tuna here. They start chumming (see the dead fish sinking) the guy dives down and makes a great shot. The rest is on the video.

Also I think I saw this video 2 years ago?

yeah sounds like it guess it would help to have friends like that you could always find the big schools i dont think a fishing boat would allow you in a net anyway just for insurance reasons if something went wrong hello breaking story on the news loss of boat and massive fines

I think I've seen this video in a 'documentary' before. There the two guys went to the same big fishing boats, because big tuna would trail the boat nets to catch an easy meal. The guys jump in right after the boat and nets pass, not inside.

And of cause the spearfisher men have 0 by catch :D

That's been seen as a link on DB before. I think it's in the Tasman sea off NZ. The water is very deep and those big fishing boats are deep water trawler/factory ships. They are not fishing Tuna but trawling blue whiting or Hoke (?) or something. As thet haul the nets and as they process and flush the wast then tuna and sharks etc follow the boats.

To find out more you can buy the DVD DeepBlue from Apnia (Jersey C.I.) via their web site which is an hour long documentary on spearing the WR Bluefin. Bit expensive at £25 but worth seeing. It's not the same guys as on this link but similar. https://www.apnea.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=97&products_id=930 .

Pretty sure i saw it here before too. awesome catch but smacks too much of trophy hunting when I think most spearos should be pushing the sustainability of spearfishing. theres a big campaign starting for the film end of the line and a big focus on bf tuna. Kinda hard to argue that the one was far the family and besides a fish like that gots to worth $$$$.

should make for an interesting movie thanks for the link dave i think ill order myself a copy yeah i have to say if you shoot the tuna and the whole thing gets consumed by friends and family its fair game.at least he packed the freezer i also heard that the larger tuna contain high levels of mercury and other heavy metals so you have to limit consumption.

no, he did not shoot the bluefin in a cage what you saw on the background is the trawlers net..when large trawling ship haul their net pelagics, sharks, seabirds and even seals come for a free meal (small fish dead or dying fall from the net) and the spearos know that bluefin will come too what they do is follow one of the trawling ship and wait for them to haul in their net. hope this clears things up, good day fellow spearos :)

If I could shoot just one such tuna, or even half of this size, I could consider the mission accomplished and retire from spearfishing to feed golden fish in an aquarium

Oh no. I've come over all PETA. Seen this video before. I feel uneasy watching it. I read an article just this week showing the different types of tuna: (Great) Blue Fin tuna is consider under threat/endangered (like bigeye tuna but unlike the yellow fin tuna that Miles fishes for, skip jack & albacore, which are considered sustainable, for now).

282kg is not that big for a Great Blue Fin tuna. I've seen pictures of them in Yorkshire where they used to catch them at 900lb+. They can/could reach well over 1000lb (about twice the size of the fish shown). They don't visit Yorkshire anymore :(, their foodstocks, herring, was overfished to the point of destruction. Blue fin tuna are expected to completely eradicated from the Mediterrainian soon because of over fishing. :(

It's the hot topic this week too:

I wonder whether and when the issue of overfishing will become as pressing as greenhouse gas or ozone layer thinning. If the blue fin tuna is in danger, then I am prepared to rescind my determination to spear one, but on condition that I am compensated with a chance to shoot some other tuna of the same size. If anyone is interested in helping me to help save more blue fin tunas that way - please don't hesitate to contact me.:)

I swim every day with these giants,at fish farming where i dive to see the cages, they swim next to me and feed them in their mouth, its a pity to kill these fish.Anyway i dont spearfish at all i dont like to kill nothing,in sea or land.Sorry for my english :crutch

I hate to break it to everyone

But everything we do kills fish. You may be a vegetarian. But even posting on this board via your computer is killing fish. Why you ask? You bought a computer manufactured by someone who is getting paid by you and that person can then go out after work and buy fish caught by a no good trawler or longliner. And on that subject, how nice is it to know that all fish caught in nets are suffucated to death, and most long line caught fish are on the hook for 1-3 up to 7 days before beeing taken up. Not to mention all the bi-catch.
Also you may not be a hunter but working with a fish farm not wanting to kil anything. I work on a fish farm. And just in case anyone is in doubt, we basically kill all the fish at the end of the process. And in making that fish we use 4 pounds of fish for every 2 pounds of fish produced. Im not sayig i don't care, I hate my job, but I am making a living just like everyone else. If you want to help and do something.

STOP buying fish and meat that you don't kill yourself. The world would be much better if everyone knew from where and why their food was on the tables. That 1 tuna on the video makes me so much happier to watch than just thinking about what happends when the fishing boats are cathing 100's of them. Just my short opinion.

(*Edit hehe I must have been in a bad mood earlier. I hope no one took it personally. Now I have been diving, and feel much better. Sorry for the angry post.)

lol i do actually agree with you we are having massive problems on the west coast with the farms sea lice bacteria killing lots of local species its always in the paper i dont know much more than what i have read on the subject .and i do love shooting my dinner spearfishing is the way i swim through schools of fish that would be bi catch to a trawler or long liner and shoot the size and species i desire.if you have every bought fish from a store you are supporting commercial fishing any fish you eat more or less that you didnt catch comes from the commercial fishery usually which is devastating the ocean.

Glad to hear that hyeparis, although any fish that gets as big as a great blue fin tuna is likely to be under threat. Forum member Miles has in the past taken out forum members with him to catch yellow fin tuna - which are currently considered sustainable. I suggest that you contact him in South Africa. They are not as big as the great blue fin tuna but they are still huge.

The story is still running in the press and there are some interesting graphics, shocking really:
