Hey guys,

Have done a little search and was wondering what Morocco would be like in Feb? Have a week and wanted to do a bit of spearing and just a relax on the beach in the sun!!!
Anyone been out there spearing? Portinfer, I saw a thread that you may have been going but not sure if it went ahead?

What sort of temperature can we expect on the Atlantic coast?

Cheers

Dave

Dave - try and get hold of one of the past copies of apnea magazine from their website (french unfortunately) they had an article about 8 months ago I think which described a spearfishing trip straight off the desert in southern Morocco - they visited 3 or 4 locations with some pretty good catches from what I could gather (from the pictures!!)

good luck

Cheers James,
Will have a look on the website now.
Do you spear in the uk at all? I am moving down to Cardiff in a few weeks, I could see that you are in Bristol, do you dive south wales or more around Devon, Cornwall?

dave

I spear on the south devon coast from Portland along to Thurlestone and I have tried the Gower without much success. However I want to fish the Gower more next year - just need more time to experiment with locations - PM me if you want to dive some time. Let me know if you cannot find the article on Morroco - I should be able to help you.

James

OK Dave so the magazine article is called "Vers les sentiers de l'or " in magazine 177. If you register with www.apnea.fr (free) and search the archives under "Etranger" you should find it.

Wicked cheers james,

Would be up for a dive on the south cost next year for sure, just got to get this winter over with first!!

Do you do any freediving? Will prob go along to chepstow over the winter just to keep the gills moist!!

Thanks

Dave

Dave - will probably get some diving in this winter, chepstow sounds good, but I have just bought a new 7mm elios suit so will be doing some spearfishing aswell weather permitting (brhh) we should tie up if the wind allows and get into the sea. I will PM you when I go out next.

James

Well up for some winter spearing!! do you get any viz on the southcoast in the winter? I went in yesterday and thats the latest I have speared bass up here, but if the swell and wind stays down then I am sure it will be fishable for another month!!?
I have a few spots in west wales for the summer which have always produced bass, mullet and big pollack.
Cheers for that
Dave

I read the article too and researched going there between last March and May--I didn't. February is very bad. Rough, cold and very murky. Coincidentally, few friends of mine were visiting the same region in Jan/Feb while I did the research. I called them and they confirmed pretty bad sea conditions, but the landscape and food are awesome. February is good on the Southern Hemisphere, though.

I have a french DVD which is spearfishing in Morocco.Les grand Pagres d'moroc or somthing similar. The big bream of morocco.Viz doesnt look great but the spearfishing looks great. Some massive bream all from offshore reefs in shallow water. You can get an easy jet flight to Marrakech and then bus or taxi to the coast, which is what I did with the missus, to Essouria.Unfortuantely I didnt have any gear with me so didnt dive, but Essouria is beautiful(setting for the film, Kingdom of Heaven) Its cheap too.I dont know if the big bream just come in at certain times of year or if they are always there. The former I suspect.
