so i just got a RA composite reel for my riffe. now its time to drill holes in my expensive hunk of wood. any advice or tips before i start? i just want to make sure im doing everything right.
thanks

I'm a relatively new user to this forum and I really appreciate all the helpful discussions I've found. This is my first post as I can't seem to find anything about this topic. I too just purchased a RA Composite Reel and will be installing it on my Riffe Comp. I'm just curious as to the best approach in drilling holes in my gun. Anytime I drill a hole in my boat I normally fill the hole with 3M marine adhesive and put some on the threads. Is there something like that I should be using when I install the bracket for my reel? Or a recommendation to make solid. Also, Any advice on alterations of the bracket or reel base is appreciated. I've seen posts from members who have ground down the reel base and skipped the dovetail bracket altogether. Thanks again for all the great info!!

Some folks remove the radial contour from the dovetail bracket when mounting on a flat surface (cannot remember what the Riffe looks like). I would suggest that instead of using 3M adhesive try a five minute epoxy, most hardware stores sell the stuff in two attached syringes ready to use. Just squirt out as much as you need and mix thoroughly. I would recommend this approach for your boat too. What many shipyards do when installing fasteners or thru hull fittings is first bore an oversize hole and fill it with epoxy and let cure. Then they bore the appropriate size hole for the fastener into the cured epoxy. This ensures that the wood is completely sealed and makes an very strong connection. This might not be necessary with your Riffe but I'd at least use epoxy instead of caulk to coat the threads.

Good advice. Thanks. I like the tip about how to use epoxy for boating applications. Makes sense and sounds like it would create a good solid area where the hole is drilled. Appreciate the input.

Aloha Jason - The fish is a MU also known as Big Eye Emperor in other parts of the world - hard to stalk & very good eating. This reply was meant to be attached to the photo sorry for the screw up - My Rob Allen is flush mounted onto my gun - I think Daryl Wong installs the rob Allen reels the same way. Easy to do - throw away the bracket that screws to the pipe gun - take the spool of the spindle - grind the back of the reel base flat - select two appropriate flat face countersink screws to mount the reel - select a countersink drill bit matching the screws dimensions for a profesional finish - line everything up where you want it - drill - silicone - screw - done! You will appreciate knowing that your reel won't fall off when you least want it to & your gun will be custom & more hydrodynamic. Hope this made sense - let me know if you want me to post some pics

Spoonman - OK, After reading your description of the modification I get it. My situation is different though. My Riffe is a comp, which has the rounded bottom. Looks like the bracket does have the correct shape for my gun. Maybe I'll just screw right through both for a more solid mount. I was hoping to get the reel a little closer to gun, but at least I'll have it mounted permanently. Thanks for the input. OH, Very nice MU! I'm starting to get shots off on decent size MU, but they are tricky fish. I have yet to land one. Always seems like the real big ones stay just out of my range. I often see ghostly silhouettes of large MU that creep out of sight.
