Hi everybody,

i will be in Mozambique and East coast ZA in December. I am looking for someboby to go spearfishing with.

Also, can you recommend some place i can go spearfisng from shore? Any other tipp on where to go will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Dario

Hi Dario,
Will you be wild-camping.? if so then I can recommend Pomene, a few hundred k's up from Lourenco Marques, or Maputo as they call it now. If you camp way back on the beach next to the trees where the road-trail meets the beach you can walk along to where the ruins of Pomene Hotel are & dive off the point straight into 25-30ft. You don't need to go out much further as everything comes in close to the point sooner or later.

Expect to see absolutely anything there, & we used to get right under the point into some of the deep caves & fill up sackfulls of huge crayfish which took both hands to get off the rock.

You'll need a reliable 4x4 though & be fully independent as it's about 60kms off the main road, with some sand to get through as well, & you turn off at Rio dos Pedros.
Pre-Independence, in the early '70's it was an absolutely brilliant spot for spearos, with South Africans coming up to the Hotel & Rhodesians driving down, but not sure if anything's going on there now.
My mate & I spent months at a time there, & it was one of the best spearfishing spots I've ever come across. We broke ALL the South African records for just about all game species we shot, but it didn't count of course as they weren't shot in South African waters.!
