Hey fellows,

I've been diving since three years ,and lately found that mucus build while diving so every couple of descent I have to clean the shit out of my nose. :duh Basically, if I start my warm up to 15m couple of warm up then equalisation get difficult until I clean my nose then equalisation goes well then again mucus make it difficult.

It seems the mucus kinda moving when facing pressure

  • I've been using rinsing ket for a while, it helps the cleaning inside the passage.
  • Not allergic to any food at all, done the test.
  • No problem with equalisation out the water.
  • Franzel equalisation
  • pb 35 meter.

Any thought would appreciate it :inlove

If you were doing a scratch allergy test for food allergies, that tells you nothing about food intolerance, which can cause considerable mucus. My son isn't allergic to milk, but getting off it for a week or so before diving helps a lot in his equalization, less stuffy nose, etc.

Thanks cdavis for taking time to replay. To be honest I've read about dairy products how might affect the equalisation from building more mucus.I'll try to stay away from milk, cheese etc and will see how it goes.

I'm interested to hear how you get on. I have a problem with mucus when diving as well. Have taken to using mucinex a few hours before diving and also use otriven spray which works almost instantly and makes me need to blow my nose and cough it up. I always end up with a snotty nose during a diving session and have to clear my nasal passages a few times out in the water.

I'm one of those people who has to always have a box of tissues at home. So this makes me think that doing an experiment and laying off dairy for a week might be worth trying out. Pity its at the end of summer!

Ms Mer,for me quitting dairy was a night mare bro,no cheese, wheat, coffee for 7 days ... but never went perfect, less mucus tho. Mates told me it might take a while, kind of a month and then a good result can bee seen.

I'd say give it a go and see how it goes.
bth you still have some nice days to dive before bloody winter arrive.

I've eliminated dairy and use a neti pot at least 5x / week and always the days leading up to diving. Sometimes even just before a dive to clear everything out.

My first deep dive session ever was hindered by sinus congestion. I vowed never to let that happen again. I don't get to dive enough, so having a session ruined / limited by congestion doesn't sit well with me. :D

It's the soy in my coffee that worries me the most! I have a netti pot but don't use it enough probably. True kingfish7, some good weather for a bit longer. I have dived a bit in winter down here in wellington, just can't stay in as long.

Hey Ms Mer
Could be an intolerance to wheat, Dairy or Orange Juice (Citric Acids), they can all promote the production of mucus in certain people.
My own intolerance is wheat and my diving is so much better if I cut out wheat for three days before any big dives.
My experience as an AIDA instructor Trainer is that people who have an intolerance are usually only intolerant to one of the possible three sources, and that the citric acid intolerance is the one that is seen in the least number of people.

King,

Is the mucus thin or thick? If it is thick, it is probably crud that is being accumulated in the sinuses since the last dive session. Equalizing the sinuses provides the gas to expell the crud on the way up from a dive. If that is the case, you have got a sinus infection or, more likely some kind of allergy/intolerance. Solution is find the underlying problem. Check for infection, try eliminating the likely intolerance candidates. Warning, it may take a while (weeks) for an elimination diet to show results.
