With help from people here on deeperblue and from various poking around teh internets, I got enough info to DIY my own weight belt and weights. I did a little write-up on it on my bloggy thingy. Just thought I would post up a link for people here. I probably got a load of things wrong, if so feel free to say so. it is all in the spirit of learning.

Nice write up! Do you think a heavy-duty MTB (mountain bike) tube would be adequate? could use the whole thing then, just glue it closed. I have several of those laying about. I use them to make quickie little rubber bands for securing things after they cannot be patched any more. Thanks for sharing the email address of the mold maker in Canada-I had lost it and needed to get a mold from him. I have an electric lead melter that I use to cast lead bullets. By the way, wheel weights also make good lead sources. The stick-on ones are the best, though the ones with the steel crimp can work too. The steel floats to the surface when you melt the lead. It's harder than flashing lead which is almost pure. The only ones not to use are the ones that are too hard to scratch with a penny; often have a clear-coat looking exterior. Those have a lot of zinc in them and don't cast well.

when I was getting advice here before I made my rig, someone was saying they use MTB tubes and put pelleted lead into the tube, giving a stretchy tubular belt. I am sure there are any number of ways to make awesome dive belts. the key thing is stretchy, and strong, and has a quick release system.
re:lead, the trick is finding it. I got lucky. think wheelweights are moving away from lead now. but cannot hurt to ask around.
