Wow, my wife and I just returned from 2 days of Performance Freediving beginner training in Vancouver BC. Martin Stepanek (world famous freediver) taught the course and personally coached us thru all the practice diving. Martin is a great teacher and coach and easily made sure we learned all the necessary safety skills while happily answering our nubie questions about his amazing feats, like his +100m constant weight dives.

It was quite a thrill to have Martin personally coach and time us for our practice in pool statics. My wife set a personal best of 3:33 (up from about 2:30) on Saturday and I set a personal best of 5:15 (up from 4:20). If that's not amazing enough I didn't even push my 5:15 that hard as Martin informed me that if I blacked out I would not be able to do the open water dive that afternoon for safety reasons. Martin is very serious and strict about safetey and at the same time very open and considerate of people not doing exactly in the style that he teaches.

When we first signed up for the course we promptly got a Performance Freediving T-shirt and a thick +100 page manual in the mail. I was amazed as I read the manual how many new things I learned. I read deeperblue all the time so thought I was very well informed. Later in the course I learned a ton more and many things that I had only read about and not really understood made complete sense.

The open water ocean diving was alot tougher. I have only freedove in cold water a few times and never with a weighted line and never at horseshoe bay so the whole deal was pretty "spooky". The one really easy part was having Martin there watching the whole time. He would dive down and check on us as we did our training dives down the rope, it added alot of feeling of security plus having done all the practice rescue technique in the pool beforehand. Martin not only made it look easy, he made it easy for us too. I easily did the 20m line and was going to go a bit deeper untill I got cramps in my calf. Another student did 20 meters as well using thier hands on the rope (free immersion) and before that they had only snorkeled really and not dove deeply at all!!

So anyway if this sounds like an advertisement for Performance Freediving I guess it is, though just from a happy student wanting to say thank you to Martin and Performance Freediving and let everyone know that the course rocked and was well worth the cost, time and effort. If anyone has questions about if the course would be good for them I would be happly to give an answer. - Cheers Wes

thanks for posting your experience Wes.

Getting trained andtimed on statics or watched down the line by Martin, well, that should be worthy travelling around the globe. Unfortunately, i good number of freedivers, me included, cannot afford a trip to Hawaii, Miami or Vancouver, plus the actual cost of the training - i wish i could.

It would be great if PFI would do more courses and some on the other side of the pond, in Europe. I bet they;ll get full house not only for a couse but a few back to back. Until then, i will only tentatively safe for that Hawaii trip but likely will spend the savings on going to Egypt 3 times instead :)

I'm going to to Miami next month for Performance's 4-day Intermediate course, and I can't wait! I've already been in contact with Mandy-Rae a few times, and she's always been very friendly. It's going to be great getting to meet, learn from...and dive with....these amazing people!

I noticed on their website they have a course scheduled aroun 7-10 September in Norway but alas, I am busy around that time... buggar!

Would be fantastic if we could coax them over to Europe a bit more.

You are right, i knew about the Norway course, but that's one off this year and, no offence to our Norway buddies here, it's hard to find a more pricy place in europe... what about a re-run in Greece or Turkey? France (Nice) or Spain would also do and the water will not be too cold in the summer... perhaps with enough interest and people we can get it done.

Yeah its a big comitment of money, on the other side though the money is going to pioneers who are willing to share thier knowledge with others which I think helps the whole world in many many ways so for me its a good way to spend this money that I do have. Also we drove to Vancover BC from Oregon and camped out with friends so the main cost was for the course. Taking my wife along doubled the cost though now she wants to go freedive this weekend and also in Hawaii this fall so that is definitely worth it!!

I think its a great idea to ask the Performance Freedive team to do a course in Europe. You never know if one of you freedivers out there knows of a good location and can help set the whole thing up with accomadations and good diving location and all it might be a free course for you. I am not speaking for the Performance Freedive team of course, just an idea. I know its alot of work to set something like a freedive course up, especially in another country adn having a local representative can make it all go much more smoothly.

Cheers Wes

I just thought I'd let in my opinion on this subject as I was enjoying four days of quality freediving this weekend with Martin Stepaneck and the other partisipants.
The Performance Freediving Clinic in Norway was an amazing event, much thanks to Martin for teaching and sharing his incredible knowledge and experience, but also to Simen Sørensen.

Simen was the one from Oslo Freediving Club who took the initiative and set up the whole event, from taking contact with PFI and organising the diving, location, most of it. It takes alot of work to get things going the right way, but it is very much possible, even up here in Norway. ;) What you need is only people who take the initiative...

The course (or clinic or something) was actually tailored after the wishes from the partisipants and that ment a lot of constant weight diving! We had sessions in the sea friday, saturday and sunday, focusing on technic and the different parts of the dive. We also had theory classes and two pool sessions with both safety and technic. After a long, active weekend we had gotten so much information and new knowledge that it will take some time for it to sink in. I can tell you it was well worth the work, time and money!!!

The event will probably be repeted in an extended version in one or two years, hopefully with more people and even more fun :) I can warmly recommend the classes of the PFI team and hope to be able to do it again.

Cheers,
Elisabeth
