A few days ago I have done my first 50m dnf. After I hit opposite side of 50m pool, breathed in, then out (I was diving with semi-empty lungs) I felt strange 'sucking' feeling below my stomach. That feeling disappeared in 1.5 minutes.
I have never felt anything like this when diving in sea (up to 20m), maybe because my lungs were always full. When I am doing negative static on the bottom of the same pool (2,5-3m) I rarely have similar feeling, but not so strong.
Any ideas, why this happened? I don't like it :waterwork
BTW: I had only light breakfast 5 hours before going to pool.

What did your budy observe?
Things like red back, blue lips, contractions or other spasms in the thorax, .....?

Nothing unusual. I had surfaced before contractions had begun, no samba, nothing. I think 50m is not enough to all that stuff to begin. All dive was less then 1.20min.

50m DNF is way more than enough to make contractions appear and a samba too if you're not experienced enough, try doing the same dive with full lungs and maybe a weight belt if you're worried about buoyancy

I hope I am not that inexperienced to suffer samba after less then 1'20''. I am used to make up to 2 min dives on full lungs (without packing). But with full lungs I never felt something similar. Maybe it's a known FRC issue?
The closest I can describe it as a violent sense of hunger :mute

1'20" dynamic with empty lungs is a lot! I think the feeling is some sort of contractions - they do feel different with FRC.

Contraction feelings, sambas and any other ocurrences can or can't be related to the dive time, a plethora of factors are involved in such events, such as recovery time, water temperature etc...

My wild guess is that ever since you're not using full lungs whenever you are getting to the 50m you are hypoxic... DNF is one of the most physically demanding freediving modalities... even more so than DWF.

My lungs were not empty, just FRC.

Hm. I thought, that contractions cease immediately when you breath in. That thing lasted more than minute afrer.

THE MAIN QUESTION: will it pass to oblivion with further training, or I am doing something basically wrong? :wave

I guess that unless someone else has experienced the same thing as you the only person able to answer your question is yourself... keep training and see if it goes away

It is common for me to have similar experiences training FRC DNF. Near the end of the dive I clearly start feeling contractions, which result in the same kind of feeling you mentioned. Sometimes I have the same feeling doing long statics with full empty lungs. I imagine it is a result of the contractions, which are stronger with non-full lungs, especially if your diaphragm is not relaxed enough. When it happens to me I usually do some stretching for the diaphragm, a couple of full lungs trials, then I continue my training (FRC or empty lungs).

Hope this helps you.

I had not any chance to try it :( My favorite 50m pool was closed this sunday and i had to go to 25m one, and it was too crowded for dnf (stumbled in some people a few times). So I'll try it next sunday... :duh

But that pool has a 4m deep zone in it :inlove ! I exhaled air to be negative buyouant went to the bottom and stood there and walked around (I was reluctant to lie or sit, because it's to deep for my swimming goggles - bad for eyes). Strange enough, but even after 1'40'' of this bottom walking I didn't had contractions or strong urge to breath. No discomfort at all.

I had green tea with lemon before going to pool, maybe it was real cause?
