Hi everyone.
I've just completed my first spear tips!

I made one conventional "flopper" style tip using 1/2" steel spike, a small wrench that came with a piece of furniture, and a chunk of a clothes hanger.

I also made 2 slip tips using 1/2" steel spike, and 1/16" aircraft cable + crimps, and paintball gun o-rings.

They are RAZOR sharp and ought to do the trick, I think.

I'm a huge fan of using what you got / recycling. Post some pics when they kill some fish.

If you are spearing anywhere there is rocky structure or hunting hard headed fish like lingcod you might want to consider a 4 sided pyramid tip. If you do some ballistic tests you might just find that a pyramid tip has better penetration that a cone point and it is less prone to damage from hard impacts. Your tips are way more professional looking than mine but mine tend not to last very long as I spear in rocky structure and that is hard on tips.

I see your point and you're probably right. I haven't gotten to try these out yet, but if they get blunted by the rocks I can always modify them. Thanks for the tip.

Those look realy nice! pretty sweet that u made them out of materials you found around the place. Looks like they will penetrate any fish good.. and travel through the water with ease.
But i do agree with the pyramid tips, they last much longer when bashed into rocks or reef and still although not being as sharp, penetrate fish well.
I also find the pyramid tip hits the fish harder.

Hope they work well for you, nothing like making something and putting it to good use! Nice one man!

A simple penetration test can be a real eye opener. Take 2 nails, round one tip to resemble one of your spear tips and then try and hammer them into the wood. You will find out very quickly why nail heads are shaped the way there are. BUT.......Your tips are still really nice and 100% compatible for spearing in open water and for use on most fish. The only trouble you will run into is a fish with a hard head or hitting a rock or other structure.....Other than that those tips of yours are sweet.

I agree about the open water thing. In fact, I modeled the slip tip specifically on the riffe Ice-pick design. I love their gear and wish I could afford it. Since I can't all I can do is copy the masters.

Nothing wrong with copying the masters!

Those spear tips look just as good, what material did you use to make them?
Im thinking about trying and experimenting with making some on my little 30 cm weird angle or obstructive hole shooting gun.

They're both made from a section of a 12 inch galvanized steel spike(<$1). When I'm not using them I'm going to keep them in a zip-loc with a bit of WD-40 on them. For extra rust protection I sprayed them with a few layers of clear krylon... especially the cable and crimps.
