My first Hawaiian sling was just a classic wood straight handle style, but I didn't like the holding position so I went hunting for the right piece of wood. After finishing this one I realized how similar the bend is to that of a deer antler and am thinking about trying to make one with a shed I have. Does anyone have any input or advise on making one?
Any and all input or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

I have finished forming, drilling, and cleaning the antler model and am now just waiting for sealant and then I have to put on the tubing and then I will post some pics posted.

Right now I only have a 3 foot shaft but i will probably upgrade to a 60 inch spear soon

Thanks,
Chris

A 60 inch shaft will work much better. I like the 1/4 inch diameter shafts, they fly fast and high. Hard to find in the US.

How are you holding your sling? with the notch between thumb and fingers?, a pistol grip?, other?

Yeah I have been using 1/4" shafts that I make myself and really like them so far but I have been having trouble finding longer pieces but I know where to get them now so I will soon be upgrading.

I hope these pics help with how I hold it

Thanks,
Chris

In essence, that is like a pistol grip with a wide angle instead of 90 degrees. We found that 90 degree pistol grips are unstable and throws off the aim. Once you get your 60 inch shafts and a fair bit of practice, the sling should be very accurate and consistant. I'd like to know if you feel the pistol grip type of system is affecting your aim.

Thanks,

Connor

I just got the 60" shaft and so far it has not affected my aim at all. I also will be finishing the antler model tonight, hopefully... :)

Thanks,
Chris

Just Finished the Antler model, fairly happy with the out come. Haven't got it wet yet but did put a few shots through it.
I oiled it with boiled aniseed oil and let dry over night, then dipped it in trap wax for 15-20 secs removed, let dry, then dipped again. I hope that should help prevent water damage.
