I'm looking forward to seeing M. Night Shyamalan's "Lady in the Water", especially after watching "Village", but more so because it's about a girl who dwells in the pool (same as Village, the actress will be Bryce Dallas Howard)- described to be a water nymph or "narf" as i have read on some sites. Anyone know what a "narf" is?

I think i'll get a track suit with "narf" written on the back. :p

There is only one thing that pops into my head when I think of "Narf":

I'm still not sure if it's a word he made up.
There's the Japanese "ninyo", greek "nyphele" or nymph, Nethuns, Etruscan god of war and sea, and Nantosuelta, gallic river goddess (name means 'winding river'). ???

Narc(osis) is when you're in the water too deep, maybe narf(osis) is when you're in the water too long. rofl

Of course here in the states we have, "Nympho" which translates to "loves to get wet"!

I totally agree! :D And enlightnening. He takes you on this crazy journey, suspends your beliefs and makes you scare yourself silly. It really is true that we have nothing to fear but fear itself. You know it's going to be a good movie...

Speaking of which "Aliens of the Deep" (James Cameron documentary) was great too. Even a little freediving in it!!

Narf is also Texan for Nerf, foam balls and toys.

"I can't sleep on this here couch without a pillow. Hand me that Narf football."

Narve is Texan for nerve

"I wouldn't reckon she had the narve to show up to the picnic wearin' that skirt with no panties!"

I often find nerfs floating in my pool.. but i wouldn't have the narve to jump in to get them.

Narfermind...

The same person directed "Signs"? What a marvelous movie that was!

Even so, I think the ambience of any movie could be ruined -

Character 1 - "What is that over there?"
Serene, beautiful music plays.
Character 2 - "I believe that is a ....." Squints, shakes head. "That, my friend is a narf."

But, how do we REALLY know when a narf is a narf?

I think they need to work it out themselves. Maybe in gang-fight, interpretive dancing...much like West Side Story.

I could have chosen 'narf' as my username (a naiad is a water nymph).

But then it would be hard to take me seriously with narf above every post.

I'm glad you went with naiad, it suits you! (also my favorite rodin sculpture!) :D

So in my quest, I stumbled upon this:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Narf&defid=1501354

I'm thinking Shyamalan should have gone with a different word.. rofl
Synopsis, in case ppl were wondering:
"Cleveland Heep rescues a mysterious young woman and discovers she is actually a narf, a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the treacherous journey from our world back to hers. As Cleveland falls in love with the woman, he works together with the tenants to protect his new fragile friend from the deadly creatures that are determined to prevent her from returning home."

So it's true! Maybe the actors have some exotic accent that makes it sound good.
"Naaf"
"Nof"

Nah, I still don't see it.

Maybe just a yankee accent! or the infamous Been-in-the-cold-water-too-long accent..

Cleveland: "where'd YOU come from?!"
Narf (shivering, meaning to say North): "Nor-fffffff"
Cleveland: "Narf?!!"

Ha ha ha ha!

Perhaps the soundtrack will be performed by Dire Strait's Mark Narf-ler....er....Nopfler.
