neck weight?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

I was currently in the process of buying the things i need to fabricate a neck weight when it dawned on me that i had no clue how heavy it should be and i don't want to sink like brick by strapping too much weight around my neck.
I am aware that different people will need different weight and this is only gonna be accomplished through a bit of trial and error.
So my question is.
What are the parameters? Ive heard 3's, 4's and even 24's thrown around with no reference to wether its measured in lbs, kilos or ounces. What would be a rough starting point for a 5,11" male, weighing in at 11.5 stone.
Can someone shed some light on this for me please.

If you don't use wet suit it your neck weight should be in the range of 2-4kg depending on lung size and amount of fat. Try with weight belt on your neck first. That will give you a rough estimate.

I ended up buying 8x 8ounce led fishing weights which i think is a lil under 2kilos, that seemed to feel like a reasonable weight out of water. So i think I'll put it together and test it. Be no problem adding more weight if needed.
I don't use a wet suit and im training my self in a 2 meter deep pool. (Don't know if the depth is a significant factor?).

Depth of the pool is not significant. You should have neutral buoyancy at the depth you will swim (usually 1 to 1.5m)
 
Selecting weight is easy - take a full breath and do DNF in pool. You must be neutrally boyant. Swim very slowly and observe if you go down or up. In DYN if technique is poor, it may be too heavy and pull you down. But I would work on technique instead of using lighter neck weight.
 
Is there a difference between DNF and DYN with respect to the weight ?? I myself feel much less need to have a neck weight in DYN, whereas in DNF it really helps me...
 
SO much bad Advice here.. Everything matters when deciding wheight... Depth of the pool and how deep you swim, how much air you get in your lungs, how much fat/muscle you have ( yes they ahve different density). How tall / short you are, how flexible you are ( body position while swimming). Swimming Thechnique. Only way to know how much wheight you need is to try different untill you find a fit. And then mabey 3 months down the line this wheight will have changed most likely.
 
I assume we are talking for pool here (depth diving, weights will be vary different). It's a trial and error thing to get it right. Use no wet suit, take the breath with the same number of packs you intend to use with your dynamics, push off the wall and coast to a near standstill. If at the end of the coast you sink or float, adjust weight to make yourself as close to neutral as you can. It is more important to be right on with the amount of weight for DNF, than it is for DYN. If later you start using a wetsuit, you can usually just compensate for the suit's buoyancy with a waist belt because it's buoyancy will be centrally located.
