Hi,
I have seen, in certain other threads, people mentioning neck weights being used instead of waist weight belts in freediving. Are neck weights like their name suggests being weights around one's neck?!!! If so how are they attached?:)
Thanks.

Thanks Phil,

I was imagining a high-tech peice of equipment made potentially of carbonfibre with a fancy quick-release system and perhaps even integrated into a wetsuit. How wrong could I be! A tire tube filled with lead shot all kept together with the faithful duct-tape!
This is why I am attracted to freediving - I love the simplicity!:)

Because of your terribly rude comments in the other thread I shall be helpful.
Use something like a 357 Chevvy block, and a chain. Enjoy! :p

But really buddy, tube, lead, tape, clips. Not hard to make with some of those guides there
And they're usually used WITH weight belts. I like to use it in dynamic in the pool, keeps you very "flat"

Sorry for those comments bloke:D. I'm sure you queenslanders say heaps of sh*t about us sydney-siders!
Anyway, thanks for the advice - the funny thing is when I first heard about neck weights I was imagining some sort of weighted chain or something!:)

Don't be sorry! I love it!! Good fun mate.

Yeah the term neck weight DOES seem a bit daunting. "Why the hell do I want a weight, around my NECK?!"

Yeh,
Thats why I posted this thread. I heard about neck weights and I started wandering what sport I was getting into!

Classy freedivers use solid gold neckweights. B A Baracus is said to have started this Gold Bling Bling neckweight trend:

Argh. Speaking of neck weights, I left mine at home!! And diving tonight.

Yeah, you will get the information and be able to have a close look at the neckweights of the Sydney Freedivers. They train in 3 or 4 different venues around Sydney. The only stipulation on neck weights are that they are sealed so no water can enter and escape. this stops a stream of lead impregnated water leaking into the pools. This is usually done by gluing and folding the ends. You can contact the guys on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/61213341411/

Yeah,
Probably better not to infuse your pool water with lead. Doesn't make a too healthy brew!:friday

Interesting, hadn't considered that lead weights might contaminate a swimming pool. Lead is not highly soluble but it can get into water - hence the concern over old lead water pipes. I wonder if all that "chlorine" (apparently several different chemical can be used used to "chlorinate" a pool) would exacerbate things?

Best not drink the pool water! (Probably sound advice anyway :) ).

Does anyone know how to make the flat neck weights you sometimes see being used in the dynamic competitions?
