Need help in buying a good speargun

Hello everyone,

Im new to this forum and also to spearfishing. Been hunting last year in France and realy enjoyed it. Im now looking forward to my next Trip to France again. Same place :friday !
So Im searching for a good speargun. It shouldnt be the most expensive but neither the cheapest and/or low qualitiy. I simply need some advise or Types of good Euro Spearguns.

Any help is welcome. Thanks....

If you are going to France, how about a well regarded French brand such as the Beuchat Mundials or Dessaults? Both seem very well regarded in the UK. Checkout: the DeeperBlue.com store [see link above], scubaland.fr, spearo.co.uk and apnea.co.uk.

It's a good idea to start with a 75cm gun, that will serve you well in most of the near-shore hunting situations in european seas. Dessault is a very good pick in the intermediate price range, accurate, well kitted, classy gun. And you can find it in the Deeperblue shop: Harpune, Tauch Unterwassergewehre. Thanks for all the help guys. In addition, I've seen guns on youtube with 2 or 3 powerbands!? Are these guns better than others? Or just more powerfull?

In France, I will be at the west coast, so Atlantique ocean. Dont know If that makes any differnance in choosing the kind of rifle. I thought about to about to spend about 150€ in my new gun! Any suggestions? Already took a look at your Seatec Gabbiano spaghetti. Looks nice!

Throughout Europe multi bands guns are only used by a few spear fisherman, almost every one uses a single band 750 - 900.
Personally I would choose a 90 with a rail because that is what the majority of us end up using.
Short Euro style guns with twin bands kick like a mule & wont perform as well as a single band gun, you need mass & a different style of gun to benefit from twin bands.

multiple bands make sense oly on 100+ centimeters long guns, with a broader mass to endure the recoil.
Get a 75 and enjoy it, or an 80. Learn how to get close to the fish (or how to get the fish close to you) and build up your spearfishing experience step by step, without trying shortcuts. A longer gun shoots longer but is less manouverable and it does not catch the fish for you.
The best thing for a beginner is to start with a short gun. The shortest the gun you'll start with, the quicker you'll improve your skills.

What about the range? As shorter your rifle as shorter your range?
Do you also know where to buy the seatec gabbiano for a good price (dilevery, €... etc. ) ?

RE. shorter the gun, shorter the range: in most of cases this is quite true, with some exceptions.

I think Spaghetti is right on starting with a short gun, it is more fun. I started with a 90 but switched to a 75 last year & love it, much more fun - but as you say, the range is a bit less (approx. 5x 15cm=75cm less), not a huge difference but it can make a difference. However, I found I hit a lot more close fish than with the longer gun, which more than made up for the odd out of range shots. Vis. is often poor where I dive. [If you can't choose between 75 & 90, get an 80/82cm -- a great all round size for the UK & probably a lot of other places too].

Foxfish is based in Guernsey, which is just off the French Atlantic coast, so conditions might be similar (although the Granite of the channel islands might give better visibility than other locations?). If not, they will probably be more like the UK s. coast. I believe forum member Robbo66 often spears in France - I seem to recall he likes 90cm guns (carbon Beuchat Mundial?). I think PaddyTheFrog spears the French atlantic coast too(?).

Double/triple bands take longer to load, which can result in lost fish. Lack of power is not usually a major concern here, the fish tend to be relatively small (2-20lb).

I also have the gabbiano 90 and love it...It takes a reel no prob also. I use that gun for everything low viz. I shoot small fish in the uk and have shot big fish in costa rica reefs. I use a 20mm band and reel

I learnt with a 40cm Beuchat and feel a better spearo for it. (i still use and love that gun) I want to own a 70 though for all the reasons Mr X said.

I am living in New york and people often take 50lb+ striped bass with one 20mm banded 90 cm guns no worrys.

Maybe wait to you get to the french coast and you can hold/see a few guns. Tho I would not buy anything until you research AND of course ask questions about it on deeperblue as a good sales man can sell a dead horse!! haha
