Hey everybody.. I hope you can help me !!!

I want to buy a new 90cm gun for Seabass and Mullet.. however I am stuck with only two choices :

1: OMER Excalibur 90
2: Mares Phantom FV 95 (not the carbon version)

Which one is better in terms of accuracy, reliability and range..

thank you so much....

I would go with Excalibur, well tested design, why not a cayman ?

I think you got no replies because all the great forum heads were in a heated argument over the omer airbalete.

You've got me instead !

Yeah, based on the homework i've been doing so far about the two models, I am leaning toward the Excalibur. as it has more reviews and well tested ..

So, I guess I am going for it.

why not a cayman ?

These are the only models available in my country that are whiten my budget.. So i am kinda stuck with them and have no other choice.

You've got me instead !

Your reply is very welcome and your help is well appreciated man. Thank you so much.

I had once consider the mares gun as well, they have a very nice design, but I have not heard much about them since they were released last year.
One rumor I've heard is that the barrel flexes, I was also not that impressed with the line release, but I never held the gun on my hand (My friend has a excalibur kevlar in Brazil - he loves it ).

About the excalibur, if you are going to use a reel the match 50 reel is really good. But you need to ask for the excalibur adaptor.

Yeah, I heard that too. It is what got me worried.

And if the line release is like the instinct series which means it is totally made of cheap plastic, then it will be something to worry about, as it will break sooner or later..

Anyway i made up my mind, and I am going with the OMER Excalibur 90

Regards...

Great choice! I have two Excalibur, a 90 cm and a 75 cm. Both are great and durable guns. Should anything break, you can buy a lot of spare parts cheap. Remember to buy an extra spear right away. Also buy a line bungee, which makes it a whole lot easier to load the gun and untangle the line. Preferably one with a clip on, so you can have your spare spear ready and rigged with mono.

I have an Excalibur. Whoever has come with the idea of having the line fix the shaft in open muzzle should be sentenced to doing that in the next live. Everytime, it is choppy, line gets loose and shaft starts swinging. If Mares has a better design for that, go for it.

hi from Albert
I already have a phantom 110,very similar to the 95.its very accurate even in 5.5 meters distance and easyly moved to left or right (horizontally) cause of its dynamic shape but its difficult to move vertically (up and down) causes alott of vibration and water resistance.i am also asking questions about an omer cayman 100 that seems to be more agile and accurate the same.
hope i helped you

I like the caymans, the hf2 is a very easy gun to move up and down and side by side, but a 100 gun with 5.5 meter range, I am afraid you need a air gun. I am not into airguns but the new omer looks really cool.

Check out the shape of the hf2 barell.

Hey guys, I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in. The Phantom series gun is actually a very accurate gun. It is flexible and this is by design. This is probably a little contradictory to what you've been told, or have been lead to believe, but if designed properly a little flex is not bad. In the case of the phantom, the gun flexes and when fired the flex helps to absorb some of the energy, causing the gun to be more steady and ultimately accurate. This is explained by our engineers, so you can take it for what it's worth. The reality is, I have heard testimony from many divers, dive shop owners that suggest this is the fastest shooting, most accurate gun they've ever had. Don't knock it until you try it.

As far as the plastic line release, it is cheap plastic. If you are careful then there are no problems. If you are abusive and throw the gun around, it could break. For .50cents you can purchase another to replace it. In future production we are shifting to a higher grade material and any breakage should not present a problem.

If you haven't done so you can see a short 5 minute video comparing Phantom Carbon speargun to others in a static enviornment. Shows accuracy (shaft deviation with a laser line), noise, vibration etc.. I think you will see whether the flex of the barrel is a problem or not. This testing is unbiased and essentially robotic, eliminating variance of human deflection.

Best regards,

Hey again Strangelove. :)

The video is embedded in the website so you have to go to this link Mares - Pure Instinct and look for the video lower right hand corner of the page.

Thanks for taking the time. It's not our best production but I think you'll get the idea.

Sincerely,

Zak

Hi Zohara,
i was the first owner of a phantom fv 110 in Malta.it really bends especially with 2 x 16mm bends.when shooting downwards i always had a perfect shot,,,when shooting horizontally i noticed that i was hitting the fish a slight 3 inch upwards from my aim,,,,,when shooting upwards i never hit the fish. i added a 10 grammes lead in the front hole of the head of speargun and had better results especially when shooting overhead.

for better aiming (as i try to have always the perfect shotts) i put some resin on the ( testata ) as i didnt like the round shape it has.can you suggest your engineers to make this designe for new (testatas)?? (i dont want any patent haha!)

now i have the phantom carbon 110 and is much much better but still bends a little bit.

see pic how i made my testata.
regards
