Hello everyone,
I've never spearfished here in Canada (all my previous experiences are in freshwater rivers and lakes of Russia). So now I've decided to spearfish in Quebec. Read some info on this forum and other Quebec spearfishing links but still have some questions:
1. Is 5mm open cell suit warm enough for Canadian water in spring and fall or should I go with 7mm?
2. What length euro gun should I get (never speared in water with visibility of more then 3m)?
3. Do you have to use bouy in lakes and rivers?
I know - lots of questions, but who is better to know this stuff other then fellow hunters:)?
Kind regards,
Arkbass

In Quebec in the spring you are likely going to need a 7 mil suit. There are some lakes in the summer where you will be able to get away with a 5 mil but in the spring definately a 7. As for the length of gun, well that is going to depend on where you are diving. Just like everywhere the vis ranges form place to place. Some lakes 2 m and others 10+ m. It depends where you go. If you are going to bring only one gun bring something like a vacum neumatic 60-70 cm long. Something general purpose that will work well all around. If you can carry more then something short 50 cm and something a little longer. When Im back home spearing Im using an older 70 cm imersion gun and it works great. As for the bouy Im not sure what the regs are, but Its a good idea in busy lakes. Make sure its really visable because some of the beer drinking boat users dont know what a dive bouy is. Hope this helps.

Good luck

Thanks a lot for your help. Back in Russia most of the time we use short pneumatic guns (that's what I have - 58cm Mares Jet) but the downfall is they are not very accurate. So I was thinking of adding a longer - 75cm Marc Valentin gun for a better visibility waters. Are any waters close to Ontario border that you could recommend?
Regards,
Arkadi
