I think I have reached the limits that research can get me. I need answers from people who know.

I am writing a short story which is growing into a short book. The setting is Hawaii and an unnamed fictional island situated nearer the Galapagos. My story is a retelling of Andersen's "Little Mermaid" but set in the modern day and told as if it was really happening so realistic details are a must.

Can any of you answer my questions?

What are the typical water temperatures off of these islands at various depths? According to the Web, surface temperatures are 75 to 80 degrees winter and summer respectively. But what about deeper down?

Wouldn't there be cold upwellings near areas of abundant life like coral reefs etc? I get this idea from the Discovery Channel and the DVD Blue Planet.

Why are the more common diving areas off the western and southern coasts of Hawaii? Should you not dive off of the northern and eastern shores? Why or why not?

Is there an area where diving is (relatively) safe off Oahu with deep water, say 400 feet? I know that is deeper than even scuba can go but this is a SciFi/Fantasy story. I just need an area that is private and yet not too dangerous for moderately experienced divers.

I am trying to tell the story in such a way that experienced divers and/or Hawaiian natives won't laugh at it that hard.

Anything you could tell me would be helpful.

Thank you! (in advance!)
