I have always used generic 2 mil socks and would like recommendations for a comfortable replacement.

Thanks

I heard of some latex "condom" like unisex no heel stockings, lined with, of all things, shredded pig entrails, kiln-dried and fluffed to a polyester-like sponge fabric. Claimed to be warmer than 3 mil neo. All natural, all green. Cost about $25.00 pr. Easily disposable, bio-degradible, and I believe even edible.

These can be viewed at the following link, if its still up and running:

The animal rights people were trying to shut down the site this summer, or so rumor has it.

It's about damn time you showed up at DB.

Well at least I have feet!

I have seen your toes, ..........each one is the size of my wrist, and your big toe sure as hell resembles the penis of a pack mule (but with a nail on it)!

Just how expensive are custom made fins for feet that are wider than they are long?

Sincerely,

I. Will Dewer

I use 3mil socks from Elios - smoothskin on the outside. Lovely socks, very comfortable and have been very hard wearing...

Thanks Donna!

Horace, if you know anyone who wants this pair of Omer Bat 25, please let me know. Does this new store of yours deal in Omer?

I really like those open cell ankle ones as they seal well with the suit - my pair died a few weeks ago and I haven't found another - anyone know somewhere in the UK you can get them (or a European website - I am sick of paying customs on orders from US sites!)

Jim,

You put the picture of OMER socks, they are not generic.

Cheers

Ivan

Oh, .....thanks Ivan.

They were not listed as an Omer product on the web were I found them so I thought they were generic.

Kudos.

Sam, I get a few bits and bobs sent over from the states too. I always ask the sender to enter the value on the customs form as less than 50 bucks. I have never been charged VAT or duty...

Otherwise...

3mm and 5 mm sox from Imersion work just fine and have a 'grippy' and relatively tough sole. I buy them from Apnea (and have never been charged VAT from Jersey either... :) )

I used to have a pair of those Immersion socks. They were a great sock and even had a sole on them. I don't know where to get a new pair- I bought mine at a DEMA show a few years back.

I had a couple of pairs of Picasso socks and sold them both- craziest sizing system I've ever seen!

I have those OMER socks in two different thicknesses, 3mm and 6mm, and they work pretty well.

I have since switched to ELIOS socks. I started with a pair of opencell inside/nylon outside. The were VERY warm, but my feet slipped aorund in them like crazy when I tried to walk on dry land in them- and NO I didn't lube up the inside to put them on.:duh I think I lost them at last Summer's Freedive-A-Palooza. I have since replaced them with a pair of Low density, double nylon, 5mm socks. They are great and kept my feet warm all weekend under the ice.:inlove the only thing that got cold on my feet were the heels of my feet when I wore my Waterway monofin.

Somewhere along the way I got a pair of 5mm socks from Bluewater Hunter. they worked good for summertime stuff, but no where near as warm as the rest that I mentioned.

Nick, I'll bring an extra suit for you next time so you won't get so cold in yours. ;)

If your looking for (coldwater) gloves I can reccomend a few. The Picasso 3-finger mitts are great- but nowdays are WAY too expensive. You could also try to get a pair of drygloves, like my blue ones, from a divestore or Ebay. they aren't cheap, about the same price as the Picasso mitts, but they are warm and you can find them cheaper online. My current favorite's are my 3-finger mitts from ELIOS, man I seem to have fallen in love with that comapany, they are 5mm nylon outers with a silver slick skin inner coating over opencell. They slide on easy and kee[p my hands warm. I think they only cost somthing like $25 (or was that Euros?) so the price can't be beat.

I have found the Imersion 4mm double lined titanium socks very good.
I get shoegoo and apply it to the sole it works very well at stopping premature wear.
They are comfortable warm, and very hardwearinig

I've got Parkway Scuba socks I got for 15 dollars at a clearance sale. Really durable - the souls are some kind of heavy olive green nylon weave - the ankles are smoothskin and seal well. Durable like slippers but flexible. I've been using henderson gold-core 6.5mil five finger gloves. I'm sure they are not as warm as the elios 3 finger jobs, but they do quite well really - as long as I remember to open and close my hands now and again to get warm water out to the fingertips.

if anyone is interested.... :p

Well, with so many choices, it took me awhile to make my mind :)

As a result, I got Spetton socks (E-50 Gold Termic – 5 mm, open cell inside with Gold thermic coating and nylon outside)

Overall, I'm very happy with quality (good communication with spetton-usa was a plus too :) ), too bad they don't have the same model in 3mm, or I'd buy it too.

As for gloves..... I decided to risk a bit, and ordered something that I've never heard about before - Henderson Insta Dry gloves (5mm).
The "gamble" turned out much better than I expected :) First of all, there's no zippers/flaps/etc. - a very big plus.
On inside, it looks a lot like open-cell, and maybe it is, though henderson calls it "Black Gold inner lining".
On outside, it's "Micro Mesh high carbon" or meshed rubber as I'd call it. So, the seal with wetsuit is very good.
Overall, those are the best gloves I've ever tried :)

Hmm, I ordered Elios gloves and socks a couple years ago, and as Jon mentioned I find the socks horrible for slipping around in (the stitch runs along the center of the foot, therefore it is not form fitted; for simple manufacturing), the gloves are nice fitting (3-finger style). But at the end of the day, warmth is what I care about. However, I am still undecided about their effectiveness in that arena, mainly because I have not tried much else. They are open-cell inside, nylon outside, and I am not sure what type of neoprene. I ordered 5mm for both socks and gloves. Yet, I still find my feet and hands are my limiting factor in diving and not only that, but it is limiting too soon in my interests. I dive with them in waters generally no less than 6 degrees, and after 1-1.5 hours, I generally have to take a break and go to shore to warm up my feet and hands. Meaning my hands and/or feet are rock hard and at risk of being damaged if I don't stop diving.

So, none of the comments so far have attested what water temperature and how long in it, is suitable for their favourite gloves and socks. I am suspecting that maybe it is not my equipment so much as my physique.

Cheers,

Tyler

Greet thread guys; I've been thinking about the sock question myself. My 2mm socks aren't so great, and they tend to cut the circulation in my toes while I'm diving, so an alternative would be nice :).

I have Elios socks too but they don't have the centre foot stitching that Tyler's have. 3 piece design: front, back & sole. The sole section has a plastic grip pattern which is a good feature for us shore divers - providing reinforcement & grip. I got my socks with my suit but I have since found my local supplier carries Elios socks - not sure if the design is the same though (I think possibly not). My feet do slip around a bit in them - not a problem once the fins are on; I suspect the reason is that (1) they are little too big (XL) - large would have been better and (2) the nylon liner (double lined).

I also like the look (but not the price) of these one of the DeeperBlue store:

The open cell outer looks cool (probably not tough though :() - probably easy to get into a wet fin & harder to get into a dry fin(?). The feature I really like is the kevlar reinforced sole grip -- great idea for the pebbly beaches I have visited recently (although I usually stick shoes on to get to the water).
