Hi Everyone. I am new to deeper blue and have never posted anything on the web before. Strange given all the years I have worked in Telecom and IP Network Management.

I like your community and have learned so much already. Saver's art Rocks! I am jealous of Seal moving to bahamas and I relate to those who find harmony from the Ocean.

I just finished building a homemade 40" speargun using Fish Tale's design. The butter-knife trigger is sweet. I made the wishbone and spears as well. Living in NJ will give me limited use. But it is beautiful (made from Purple Heart wood). It will get its first use next month when I am in St. Johns. It is thanks to Fish Tale that I found this site

I look forward to great interactions to come.

Foxfish, thanks for asking about the speargun. I took pictures this morning to share but I am having a difficult time attaching.

I will try to resize the picks.:hmm

If this works you should be able to see the pictures of the speargun. This picture is of raw wood. It still need epoxy finish, an additional band, line hardware and I have yet to decide if it needs a muzzle.

Thanks for the pics.
The first pic is particularly interesting as it shows all the components. You obviously put a lot of thought & work into the build, well done too
What do you intent to shot with it.

It is intended for reef fishing so fish of opportunity would include Yellow Tail, Hog Fish, Black Grouper... I dont think NJ waters are condusive to spearfishing. Fisibility is an issue and you dont have the concentration of fish as off a reef. At least that has been my experience diving.

Has your experience included colder waters? Have you ever built your own gun?

I have done a lot of recreational diving but the only experience I have spearfishing is freediving with a polespear in the Keys. That experience enlightened me to the need for distance. With the one band i can shoot the 3 foot spear about 35 feet in air. I havent had a chance to test it underwater. I have no idea what its effective distance will be.

wow.... so if I understand you correctly, you have never spearfished with a gun before and only imited experience spearfishing with a pole, and right off the bat sucessfully build your own gun...... thats great!
