And Herbert did manage to FIM most of the way up from his CNF dive in Dahab last year, though only as a joke and in any case the safety diver caught him out.

Why do you think it was a joke? Was Herbert already disqualified beforehand, or dived out of the competition, that he could afford not bothering about being disqualified, and hence just "joked" with judges instead of doing his proper performance? Are you sure he would denonce himself if he were not cought at it? I would trust it was really a joke, or judge testing, if he did it after discussing it with an AIDA official before the dive, but have really hard time believing such claim if nobody was informed, and if he was regularly competing. Frankly told I am little bit disappointed hearing he attempted to cheat, because it then puts all his previous dives in bad light too. Especially because there was already an incident at his No Limit record where they faked the record dive, while in fact doing it the day before it. I am not telling I do not trust Herbert, but I think the "joking" was definitely not a good idea.

I fear this post is drifting away from the original topic, but anyway my suggestion would be to do away with the distinction between FIM and CWT. I think almost everybody achieves the same depths with either one. In any case the differences are smaller than those between CWT with mono or with bi-fins, which at present are ignored. This would have the advantage that you can do what you want with the rope (I am sure there will be inventive techniques) and there would be no long discussions whether you were waving hallo or grabbing multiple times.

Also it would save the judges from having to make their hands and arms wet trying to feel the rope. And it would save some money and airplane troubles for those of us who suck at monofin.

Unfortunately, it would mean that suddenly we would have 2 world record holders less, so I realize I should shut up.

remembering this pre-competition play; It was to test lanyards/counter ballast, judges....the athletes were told to do something to test the system!!!!

I think the line rule is simple (don´t touch it), but could need some more detail rulevise as mentioned.

how about this?

- touching or taking support from line is only allowed 1.5 m before plate and 5 m before surface (marker on line). If support is needed between those sections it would be penalized as according to current rules.

That rule would be rather simple to supervise and the athlete has no significant benefit of pulling the last 5 m, but it would still allow for safer surfacing.

Ofcourse it would still be possible to touch the line if viz and depth allows it, but it would be clear that touching the line might lead to penalty.

In Canada we theorized an 'unlimited constant ballast' category where you could pull on the line all you want, with fins.

Ironically, in my case, I would not touch the line even if I were allowed to.
