last saturday my poolmate, buddy and friend Ilaria Bonin set a new italian record in DNF, swimming easily, smooth and elegant to 125m

previous record was 108m by Monica Barbero, who couldn't reply to this huge distance a few minutes later

Ilaria is a young freediver, she began competing last year and began serious training just a few months ago
remember her name: she has a lot more to show than this!!!

congrats Ilaria!!!!

here's the video

Interesting to see her NOT doing the standard legs-arms-glide stroke!

Congratulations to Ilaria. Indeed interesting style. Normally the leg strokes consume more oxygen, so perhaps she could get even farther with classical style. But then again, when it works for her this way, why not. Personally, when I look back at my longest DNF's, they are not very stylish - I find that the perfect relaxation and mental state are more important than the style in fact.

Which competition was it? Just this weekend I've been adding all FIPSAS competions that are available on their website to the ranking (including the recent DNF record of Michele Tomasi), but did not see this one there yet. If the complete results are online somewhere, please let me know.

Nice technique. I get very similar results when I use 2 leg kicks in a row - never really tried 3 though. I think the fact that you're fully streamlined throughout the 2nd kick and carrying a little speed offsets the higher energy consumption of the legs. I wonder if she does it because of muscle failure in her arms?

I definitly glide more with the legs because your arms are already in streamline.
Good swim..

I can't see the technique because work ban YouTube but congratulations on a great dive nonetheless!

Cheers,
Ben

she actually think to be much stronger in the legs (which maybe is, as she came from waterpolo) and that's why she prefers the 2-3 leg stroke style

thanks Dave, nice to hear from a great champ!!

Hi Dave,
I tried to use the classical technique 1 legs kick and 1 arms, but you're right, i found my arms suffering fatigue more than legs.
So, when I saw an italian instructor doing his performances legs only, I though i could try a little change.
I tried 1 arms stroke and 2 kicks, then 1 arms and 3-4-5 kicks...
I found my best style in 1 arms stroke and 3 legs kicks.
In this way I can exploit the hidrodynamic position and the strength of the legs: I don't feel weariness or fatigue in the legs, even at the and of the performance: my arms are heavy and hard, instead.

The legs breaststroke movement is natural for me, I don't even have to think about this.
I think I need more arms training, expecially for triceps, can you suggest me anything on this?

She's a bit shy: "Iaia" is of course the new italian recordwoman Ilaria Bonin :martial

Hi Trux,
it was one of the usual FIPSAS "national selective" competitions we have in Italy: not a national championship, just an occasion where you can compete both to upgrade your ranking (with fixed max distances, like I did and hey, i won my 50m DNF rank: i want to be in your database, too:blackeye) or to simply compete for victory/try a NR if you're in the top rank (the Elite ranking to which Ilaria belongs: they have no fixed max distance)

it takes two weeks for an athlete's ranking to be officially upgraded and compete in the next rank, so i guess the results will be online in a few days

Yes, I know the FIPSAS system, and add also the small competitions to the ranking. Just tell me which competition it was (in which city), so that I keep an eye on it, and add it when I find the results. I do not work with the FIPSAS ranking (it is not well suitable for that purpose), but rather with result files from individual competitions.

Ah, I found it - it was the Tresse Diving Club competition. The results just appeared on FIPSAS website this week. I'll add them to the ranking shortly.

Welcome to Deeperblue, Ilaria :)

You look very happy and relaxed at the end of your swim - which made me smile.

I like some of the arm balances in yoga - they work nicely on the triceps and also teach 'relaxing into tension' - which I think is very helpful in apnea.

I will try your method - I like the idea of keeping the streamline.

It was exactly like this, Fondueset!
I was very relaxed and calm, inside me there was a big smile!
I don't felt stress or fatigue, I was serene inside.
The smile-terapy, which Sgnips mentioned, is a wonderful way for freediving!
