F.BIZ introduces a new freedive discipline:

Freedive in Dahab april 2008

So called survival rules. Only three rules.
1) No equipment
2) Dont hold or pull the line
3) Stay with airways above water for 30 secs after surfacing.

Real freediving

Look forward to seeing how this goes. My buddy and i did some dives today. I didnt know if i should do it frc or inhale with 1 arm cnf. .:inlove:t

I think you're allowed a nose-clip; or would you use the other hand in your 1 arm CNF to keep your delicates warm? (Blue Hole in April: 21 degrees... shrink)

No nose clip but it would be better without weight also.

Read it again you can wear nose clip and weight.:head Not that much different in the blue hole with those temps realy only mask and wetsuit and turn. True test would be only swimmers .

Well yes, there is nothing new with it - since it is the oldest of them all.

This event would not have been if not Sebastian Murat had inspired us to do this and some of the top CNF guys helped to develop the rules. The noseclip spoils it - but swimming down without a noseclip may seriously damage your health (speaking of experience).

We are a bit divided regarding the weigths - some women I have consulted demanding the possibility of using weights.
Will Winram is enthusiastic but not fully so until swim cap is allowed (his hair will cause friction), but this is the point - we want to see his hair flowing. Will Trubridge likes it but thinks it is suitable for 26 degrees and above only. He is reluctant to leave his Orca suit that has the perfect bouyancy for him. I guess Fattah would disagree about the temperature (optimum temp for him is 17 degrees I believe). And Herbert, well he is up for anything, and welcomes a discipline without many rules. I hope they all will try this discipline one day.

Good job Sebastian once they get used to no mask you should see some great depths not much less than normal cnf for some i think.

Funny to read the comments of all the aces.
It seems to me that equipment does make a difference, and not only in comfort.

For long hair, it does look great under water yes, but a headband would keep it just a bit out of one's face allowing to see, and not getting entangled in the lanyard, something enhancing safety.

On the otherhand I think I would have a hard time relaxing my cold induced tence muscles... I'm not an "Ice Man".

Looking forward to the other's comments, experiences and results!

I think it should be no weights and no nose clip... and preferably very cold water.

Love the concept and your other competitions listed on the site.

What I would like: More advanced notice!!!! But I see you already have many people signed up.

I also think your safety approach is excellent.

This is the kind of thing that will make freediving last and grow... good work.

Personally, I would vote for:
Water temp: 5-8 C or 16-20 C
No other gear: sorry William!

Funnily enough, the restrictions that you've put in the rules I think will make certain people have better dives that they might realize!

This is really good and so funny
My mind doesn't work very well . However my idea in future..
this will be in the olypmic games..this techink gives more effect than other types of diving on people.. it remembers me a song Light my Fire from ''The Doors''
Thanks to all who work on it..

I like the idea of getting back to the roots of freediving.
UFC will be interesting to watch maybe even for people who are not "freediving-nerds", like most of us:t

This is probably not an new idea, but i like the competitive aspect of it.

HHCWT
Head to head CWT FIM or CNF.
-Two competitors dive at the same official-top
-Two ropes 4 meters apart. The freedivers can see each other.
-No predetermind depht.

Laminar: Do not worry. It will come your way. In ten years when the general public hear the word FREEDIVING, this is what they will think of. This is what they will see on televeision several times a year. This will be the world championship. This is it, the real thing.

They will think of men and women in swimming trunks breaststroking themselves amazingly deep - and as Steinar says: they will be doing it side by side om limitless lines.

There will be posters on the walls in the teenagers rooms with Will posing with shirt of. Herbert looking up from under his eyebrows below his shaved head. Stepanek will be sold as a plastic toy with the kids meal on macdonalds. And there will be groupies, and public challenges, and doping accusations, and blackouts, and interviews at CBS 60 minutes.

And all of you guys will be able to say: I actually been around since the time before freediving was fun to watch.

And you might actually see the result of this first UFC, because there will be cameras around.

So when's the next one?
Well we will first have to pull this one of. Hear what the athletes have to say. Evaluate the rules, the safety e t c

Then we will have one next year again, but before that I hope someone else will do an event with these rules. Hopefully Will T in Deans Blue Hole maybe. But its all up to the athletes, if they WANT this discipline or not. It is really not suitable for temps below 25 (hardcore Canadians may say otherwise).

It will also be intresting to see how it looks on film.

Sebastien Murat is an Australian, not a Canadian, and he is diving in 0C water with no suit.

I really don't understand what the big deal is. Diving in cold water without a wetsuit is a simple skill that is no more difficult than learning to pack your lungs. For some reason people treat it as some sort of 'mystic power' that they can never achieve. It is really no big deal, you just have to believe you can do it, and try it a few times. In 2003 I did a no-fins no-suit dive to 22m in a lake that was 5.5C at the surface and 4C on the bottom, and the water feels warm against your skin.

Mr Fattah, as you put it, diving in cold and freezing water is just a matter of having the right believe?

Or is there more to it?

I have done succesfull pb's in the cool waters of Sweden in a 3mm suit. But I have to skip any in water preperation, maintaining warm with a jacked and cap on the boat until 5-6 min before OT when I get into the 18c water.
I've tried no suit once in 16c water, but did not get deep, just ~10m. My heart was racing, and pounding like it wanted to jump out of my chest, so much so that I got allarmed and decided to turn, upon which the pounding ceased and things were 'fine' as I swam up.
Perhabs some more experiments with dry preperation and dry start (sitting on a platform until OT) and more body fat may yield some better results.
I do know that being cold affects buffers and tolerances and worsens the chanche of a BO quit dramatically.

Anyway I don't remember I've seen or heard of 'believers' diving repeatedly without suit yielding equal results to their suited colleagues in cold waters.

Putting on one's (trained) internal warming abilities, does help to keep core temperture. But does it also consumes much energy and air?

If it were so simple like learning how to pack, where can I read up and learn this 'simple skill'?

Thanks!

Love, Courage* and water,

Kars

*I need a lot of it diveing no suit in chilly waters!

Sssssh dont give away the secret Eric. No warm, up cold water dives and you may excell (I turned at 51 ones in 1mm shorty at 6 degree water at depth - amazing dive well "above" my actual ability). As you say, a question of training and getting use to. But it might take a lot of getting use to, and believe it or not, some people have this notion of freeediving as a blue water nice kind of thing.

But if there is an short swim to the comp site - these things can be handled.

Sebastian

Murat could qualify as honorary Canadian maybe. But isnt he sort of swiss.

Im dreaming of arranging an ice-diving competition in Oslo Norway some time in the future. Wearing just a shorty or a full suit will be optional Sebastian . Lake Lutvann is 53 meters deep and visabillity aprox 15 meters.

Do anyone know if there have been any competitions held on icecovered lakes before?
