I don't know if this is common knowledge or not so I thought I'd share it.

There has been another organisation formed to run freediving competitions and events. International Freediving Federation - Welcome to the IFF!
I have never attended a competition but some of their rules sound a bit strange- e.g. Jump Starts, No Scuba Divers, etc. They also want to make a distinction between events in 25m and 50m pools, which sounds fair enough but how will they do it.
It seems to me that A.I.D.A. has things pretty well organised, so why confuse things with too many organisations?
Having groups like PFI and Apnea Academy, which are training organisations, is great because some divers may 'fit' better with one than with another, but surely we only need one group to ratify records?
Like I said I have yet to compete in a competition, so what do those of you who have think?

Never liked shady new organisations where it is (intentionaly ?) left unclear who runs it . Or even who holds the domain.

If it's an april 1st joke i miss the point. Lot of work for verry little laughs (if any)

I can only assume that you are disqualified when using a tank and regulator in a competition. I guess that makes sense for a freediving organization.

The alternative would be that you are only allowed as a member when you officially abstain from scuba diving. Ever.

Could they be silly enough to be proposing no safety divers? I hope not!!!!:head

I don't think it's a joke. If it is then I don't see the humour.

distinction between 50 meter and 25 meter pool performance

That includes statics i hope depending which pool its done in!

rofl

guess my sense of humour is way off,

It looks to me like they are saying no safety divers in comps.

The 'no nominations' thing is a bit odd too. So you just cruise down a line until you feel like it's time to head back up? Hmm. And the 'new disciplines'? Oh dear. There are too many of the damn things already. Ahh well, should be interesting if nothing else.... one would hope they have the good grace to only accept WRs that exceed the equivalent AIDA WRs, but I bet they don't.

I wonder who is behind it? I can't find any names on the site, and there is only one page.

Hehe, I knew someone would finally find it... Anyway, read the new article on the site. Just to be clear: it was an April Fools joke! Kiwi Gee was pretty fast with that.

I should have guessed when I saw the launch date... ;)
One interesting idea is the 'no announced performances' thing. I would seriously consider doing that - of course there has to be a fixed maximum depth, but if the athlete does less than that there is no penalty, eg I announce 20m but do 15m. Of course, I would only get points for the 15m. That is one thing that I find difficult about competing and serious training - I can't announce an accurate time, distance or depth, because I have no idea what my ability will be at that moment.

glad its a joke! from what I've heard the Netherlands has enough freediving organisations - roughly one per freediver now isn't it????
