Hi Missy,
Welcome to forum, I am also based in Exeter. The forum is a great source of information for starting freediving, the search bar will lead you to many valuable threads, and there are plenty of very helpful members to help out with anything you can't find.
Do you have any gear to get you started?

Massin

Hi Massin,
It's good to hear there are others nearby, hopefully some divebuddies too ? Ive been reading lots of bits and pieces thanks. Yes I do have a few sets of gear to choose from and recently bought a Mares 5mm shedives wetsuit that I am hoping will be warm enough ? Ive done snorkelling on and off over the years hence the gear I have accumulated but never really had a chance to really get hooked on it (excuse pun) until now, lol.

I so wish this Forum existed when I lived in Exmouth - I had to move to the Caribbean to find someone to dive with (and even then there weren't many!). Now, thanks to the internet and YouTube, it's not only gaining popularity but is attracting a huge amount of women - so different to the old macho image.

Enjoy your aquatic ventures - it's addictive!

OH NO!! poor you, having to move to the Caribbean !! ha ha ha going green with envy here. x

And I realise why now - I'm freezing my arse off about to do my Yachtmaster in Plymouth! Fortunately I'll be back in the Bahamas end of June. Read my bio re. freediving charters - clear warm water (and sharks if you want them).

Yea there is quite an active group of spearo's around Devon, free divers I'm not so sure about as I am a spearo myself (well sort of, as I'm still yet to shoot anything!)
I use a 2-piece 5mm open-cell/slick inner nylon outer wetsuit, and as I only started spearing late last season and have been through til now, the water has been very cold and I've been pretty toasty for up to 2 hours hands and feet aside. A hood is pretty essential if you don't already have one integrated on your suit, gloves and socks also.
Have you dived much around the uk?
What sort of depths are you comfortable with? I may be able to recommend some nice sites for you to try.
Dive safe,

Massin

Hi Stephen,
I think I share Missy's envy!
I bet you can't wait to be back in the Bahamas, Englands awful at the moment!

I got a hood with the wetsuit which I think will be a godsend, I have wetsuit socks as well but no gloves..yet. I am comfortable to go as deep as I can on one breath.....I am guessing 40ft ...ish.
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Cool, to be honest I don't always wear gloves as I find it more annoying holding my gun, should be getting some more speargun friendly one soon, but I couldn't dive without a hood or socks.
Being warm and comfy makes such a huge difference to your ability. Do you have any weight and a belt? Because you will struggle greatly to dive down with a 5mm suit on, I wear around 9kg most of the time and it's still not easy to stay down if I'm shallow!
Have you done much/any diving around the uk?
Take care,

Massin

To be honest no, I have done most of it in much nicer places with amazing visibility lol. My first introduction to snorkelling was at the age of 10 in March off Teignhmouth.....I remember that very well indeed ! I am currently researching belt weights required and the forums have been helpfull, as I understand it once you get beyond about 5m depth you will have less buoyancy and the rule of thumb apparently is 1kg per mm of wetsuit, so, to be safe I think I will aim for 4kg's and see how I go. I also understand that spear diving is a little different to freediving when weighting is concerned. But all that said I am still open to any advise I can get .
