Hey,

After 8 happy years my Cressi Commanche Carbon 90 has died...

So I'm in the market for a new gun. I live in Norway and maining hunt pollock, up to 4-5kg. There are, however, some pretty large cod around too (25kg+). So many hunting soft bodied fish.

I'm looking for something with a bit more range, accuracy and power than the old gun.

Currently thinking about the One 105. Folks here seem to like it lots?

Also the the Beuchat Marlin Carbon sounds pretty good (is the Marlin pacific pure blue water?). Also the Cressi Geronimo Elite 105?

I know most there have been discussed before, but look for a bit of advice on guns that can happily take on larger fish and still be fun with the smaller 'normal' pollock.

Cheers!

Don't throw away the invoice (purchase bill from the store). You could need it to claim your warranty.

You may ask: warranty for what?
Well as far as I've heard the gun is really amazing, shoots great and all is fine, but some of the firts batches in production have had an issue with the camo finish tearing off. Tearing off disastrously. If your gun is part of the defective batch, and the camo finish will fall apart, you may claim a warranty to get a new gun from SPorasub/Omer at no charge.

Hopefully, and probably, this will not be your case and everything will be wonders with your gun. But I thought you sould be informed of this potential problem and opportunity.

anyone else had any issues with the safety on the One 105? The only way i can move the catch is with hilt of my knive!

Is this just crap design or an issue with my copy? (The safety does seem like a bit if an after thought, its tiny!)

cheers

Most spearos don't use the safety. It slows response, and many are very difficult to use.

I never use the safety on either of my Rob Allen guns. I also never point them toward any other diver, and I keep my finger off the trigger until I'm ready to shoot.

Good luck with the new gun! The only safety is an unloaded gun...

all very true, but you're still swimmimg around with a loaded gun. Follow all the above and have a safety on...much safer no? Just flick the safety just as you dive?

Just relying on the human element to ensure safety always leads to errors. Just look at statistics on accidents...human error in some form is at the route cause.

Do folks not think that its better to combine a well engineered mechanical safety with the behavioural safety bit? So why are safety's so crap on the vast majority of guns?

Take the ONE 105, unloading it without firing it is a total faff. With the fins on the spear, it has the potential to shed your fingers (I now have a new hole in my glove). Therefore, you tend not to unload the gun once you're in the water and finning between sites. I'd just like an extra bit of assurance...

Whatever you feel comfortable with, you should continue to do.

However there is something called risk compensation...
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_compensation"]Risk compensation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

basically if you put the safety on you may compensate with more riskier actions like pointing the gun at other spearo's or leaving on the ground etc.

Personally I do not use the safety, even with the safety on I am still aware of a minute possibility of a mechanical fail, so if I spot a lobster or crab I unload and drop the gun, if I leave the water I unload and if the gun is loaded its in my hands and treated like a deadly weapon.

But like I say, whatever you feel comfortable, chances are the actual risk will remain the same.
