Apologies if this is in the wrong place,but i put it here because i want the advice from Spearos hunting in simular conditions to myself,i.e, poor vis or very poor vis:waterwork.
I have a 70cm Beuchat which fine in most of the conditions that i hunt,but i want something longer for deeper hunting with better vis.
I'm eyeing up a 90cm Rob Allen carbon rail gun,does anyone on here shoot this gun and if so should i consider a 16 or 20 mm band ?
Anything else i should consider ?

When you say poor vis or very poor vis, what are we talking in meters??

I use this gun in good Vis (4m+) and absolutely love it. It is so light to move through the water and very powerful. I've decided to go for a lightweight setup consisting of 16mm band and 6.3mm spear but with a double wrap of mono, an I find this ideal for long range shots. They also have the added bonus of being able to handle an additional 16mm band (with 7mm spear) if you find you need even more range. I really can't find a fault with the RA guns, my mates were so impressed with them that two of my mates went out and bought carbon 90's after me.

you can always talk to crystal viz guys on facebook or check out their website www.crystalviz.co.uk . They recommend 6.6mm spear with 16mm rubbers for 80 to 90" guns. They recommend longer guns than a 90 for deeper work, They dive 15/20 meters deep and use 110 to 120 with 7.0mm spear and twin 16mm. Do you do that much depth yet??? Dont be in a rush to spend your cash if your not! Just a opinion, I still use my 75 more than my 90 and i have been doing this for sometime now. Not that I am an expert, but like you i am looking to push the depth more this month!!! Good luck to you.

Very true what wolf diver said, however you can also use a 90 in shallow water when the Vis is good enough. I've used mine in about 3m of water for long range shots without a problem. It all depends on the diving conditions you are diving in. If not maybe look around on eBay first and pick up a cheaper second hand 90 and see how you get on with it, then if you like it and fancy a carbon gun buy a RA (or other model if you see one you like). That way you are not rushing into it and spending a lot of money on something you may not use.

Hi Andy,
I have a small 75cm speargun & two 90cm guns, one of which is an RA aluminium. I recommend that you just stick with the 70cm gun, it's more versatile and there really isn't that much difference in range - but you won't . So in that case I would say that the 16mm is the better option for UK waters and so, probably for Ireland too(?). But you won't go for that either , because everybody thinks they need more power - while forgetting that accuracy, weight, balance and ease of loading are often more important. You'll go for the RA90 carbon with 20mm rubbers

I'll make the case for the 16mm rubbers (but you won't choose it - but I won't be offended). The RA is very powerful with a 16mm band, as you get about an extra 10cm of rubber with the RA bulk-rubber muzzle. Also, bulk rubber is generally thicker and more powerful than similar size screw-on rubber. The RA allows you to switch rubber size w/o much difficulty. I find the American 20mm/3/4" RA rubber a bear to load but they soften up some after a 2 or 3 years of use. I enjoyed using the 16mm rubbers more. If you get small rubbers you might also get a narrower spear (TBD) mine came with 16mm rubbers and a 6.6mm double notched spear and that's fine for either size rubber of rubber - the rail helps avoid concerns about spear wobble.

I was thinking of selling my aluminium RA90, my Omer XXV covers the same ground and is slimmer, lighter to carry, more "hydrodynamic" - and I always use my 75cm gun these days.

So to summarize, I recommend that you just stick with your Beuchat 70 or failing that, get an RA90 with 16mm bands but you'll probably want to get the RA 90 with 20mm band - and that's perfectly normal

Ill agree with tribs. That is a very nice gun also, deadly accurate and moves very easily through the water because of the cuttle fish shaped barrel.

75cm is all I use now. 90 just too big, regardless of Viz.

I/ we seach in the kelp/under boulders at depth for the bigger fish. The 75 is far more manouverable and versatile IMO. I think an 80 would be a consideration however.

I have the Cressi Geronimo Elite, it's 85 and cannot knock it, the odd time you might miss something swinging it around but it's low maintenance and accurate.

I had a good few videos from this year and was planning on doing some editing but then the laptop crashed and my harddrive is fried.:rcard

Back to the gun though, i got the version with a reel but you really do not need this for most inshore fishing I do.

I've been using an RA Carbon 90 with a 16mm rubbers this season - despite my initial misgivings, I've absolutely loved it.

It's done me proud in conditions varying from 1.5m / 2 meter murk to 8+ meter stunning viz. It's undeniably over priced but it is a lovely gun to use and very easy to rig in a swell.

Compared to the Seatec Gabbiano TRB 90 I had last season, it is a massively superior gun. The Gabbiano is a big, heavy cannon. The RA is light and nimble by comparison.

I'm gunna throw a cressi sl 70 pump gun into the mix, short powerful acurate and has a reducer for hole fishing. Great for night dives or deadly acurate for long distance day shots abd easy to load. Mines dead and now lives in the downstairs loo, i still pick it up and play with it when im taking a dump.

I've got a Mares phantom speed 75. Awesome gun, Accurate and faster than my other guns. Open muzzel. only downside is you have to rig it perfectly or the shaft slips out of the rail. (easy fix with a bungee)
I fish in all kinds of vis/depths. probs 2M min vis up to 8M

Occationally Ive seen fish out of range, but the vis is only that good a few times a year, If I'm lucky and I only use single band and single wrap. this gun will take two bands standard.

I used a Mares Phantom FV 75 earlier this year and found it unbelievably hard to rig underwater. I also found it a little under-powered for my liking although I am used to fishing with a 90.

At the mo i use 3 banded guns, all of which i have modded in some way.

For good vis day dives i have a modded comanche 90 with an open muzzle a RA 6.5MM shaft, dyneema wishbone and double 16mm bands it is also double strung. Very acurate and a deadly long range gun, but the double string makes it a pig to reload with tangles galore.

For poor vis days i use an orca 80 with 7mm shaft and uprated 18mm RA bands. A good close range giant mullet masher gun easy to load but not very acurate also lacks range.

For night dives i have cut down a conanche to 50 cm added a dyneema wishbone open muzzle and a short barbed tri point spear, fantastic for close range night dives

Thanks for the replys so far men,i've decided to hold off till Santa comes around as my Beuchat 70 looks like it will do from here on in with this stupid weather and vis were getting in the s/e of ireland at the minute,i am leaning in the direction of a RA Carbon rail for some reason,lenght has yet to be decided,is their one lenght that will do for bad viz and long range at dept,probably not,i have a Beuchat 70 ,which is a lenght that i think is going to be used the most,would an 80 with the option of a second band for dept/distance days be a good compromise ???
I don't want to get a sexy new RA 90 and end up leaving it in the jeep most of the time ,as a deer stalker,this is getting alot like calibre choice/row and all the RIGHT opinions that every one has.

I found it a nightmare to begin with. I scraped the nylon/thick fishing line that came with the gun and replaced it with dynema. I use old kite lines I have lying around, since the change it's an easy load. I found the dynema takes the shape of the line path perfectly.

I think I'm used to close range shots and haven't really taken any shots at full range. So I'm unsure of its max effective range. Guessing but it gives a strong pull when it reaches max range (when I miss) even with the bungee.

Go for the 90. When you need to you can draw the gun under you easily and still shoot accurately but you can never make an 80 gun longer.

HI Robbo, Just noticed your post. I recall that you used to prefer 90cm spearguns so was interested (and reassured) to read of your post. Great minds think alike (or two fools with the same mind ). Which 75 do you use?
