I just moved to Hawaii and have been interested in freediving and hunting for some time. Looking for any advice on gear, training, local spots to dive, and anything else! Thanks for your help if you reply.

The best thing is to find a bunch of local freedivers. You'll learn in a very short time what they find works and is important. You also may see, fit, borrow their gear.
priority shoul be on mastering al the skills to rescue a buddy from 20m deep. this way you'll learn a ton and become a capeable buddy.

so my question for you is to where you're from here and visit local dive stores to find your new buddies.

welcome to db!

Thanks for the advice. I'm from California but nowhere near the beach. Going to start checking out shops and hopefully find people willing to teach.

Welcome to DB. Whilst I echo Kars comments there is a huge amount of info and people willing to help here on DB so I suggest you post in beginner Freediving and beginner Spearfishing forums with some questions and people will be very willing to help!

I had book a lesson with spearfish Maui several weeks before our schedule lesson on 1/14/14. They email a few days before and had to canceled, no explanations, it was ok and rescheduled for the 16th. We were in route when we recieved a call and they cancelled due to poor vis. OK makes sense, rescheduled for the 18th but needed a late check out to make this work. Did not get it and could not make it but still paid FULL price due to thier policy. I replied with an e mail figureing we owed something but trying to work with them ended up costing the max. No response to my e mail discussing this. Don't think this one is fair.
