Hello all!
I am new to this sport and I am looking to get some Round Valley Reservoir diving done this year. I currently do some relatively safe stuff at the YMCA in Bridgewater to prepare myself. I begin with breast strokes (I guess thats what they are) to begin my workout, no legs. I then progress to 300 yard sprints with freediving fins, snorkel and mask, just with legs, then 300 yard sprint with arms and legs, all of the above being aerobic, breathing through the snorkel. Next, a cool down with breast stroke (same as above, the one on all the freedive videos) no legs and breathing. Once my heart rate is down i will do statics, progressing from 1 minute to 3 minutes over 3-4 attempts. I try to stay within my comfortable range of physical awareness doing these. I am afraid to do more than 3 minutes without someone next to me. I make the lifeguard aware that I am performing these and give hand signals in intervals of several seconds apart. Finally, I will (after several minutes of good breathing) swim several laps underwater very relaxed and not exceeding 1.5 minutes with 3 minute breaks between. I feel relatively safe doing the above. However, being new to this and having difficulty finding any interested parties to train with, are any of you more experienced divers out there uncomfortable with this? Any suggestions to improve safely without a buddy? Is this a good regiment? Any buddies interested?

If you are determined to train without a buddy (lifeguard doesn't count) buy a pulse O2 meter and learn to use it--do like several hundred holds under different conditions to learn how your body responds. Better yet, find somebody to train with. Possibly start looking for another pool, too. Pretty sure YMCA has a strict no apnea policy so you will probably get shut down soon.

I'd say if you're determined to dive alone... You're ignorant and playing Russian roulette....

But consider a freedivers recovery vest.
Buy it for your family / friends / loved ones.

Don't dive alone. Take a class and learn how to freedive safely.

Join us at Dutch Springs (down the road from Round Valley) when they open in April. Not sure where you are in NJ but there's a NYC contingency that pool train in Brooklyn (New York Area Freedivers on facebook) all year around as well as a group in Philly. There's also an underwater rugby team that train in Newark looking for fresh meat.

Cheers

don't dive alone!
many things can hapen under water...
the liveguard is useless...you need a buddy IN the water...
without a buddy [preferably one who know what to do in emergency situations like samba or black-out], you can have only one BO under water...
