I love to snorkel and I am scuba certified. I a healthy 70 year old. I dive to be there and see and experience. No negative feeling about competition and spearfishing, but not what I am interested in. The Lookers seem to be in the minority. I am taking up freediving as a new activity. Right now preparing for formal training by doing dry training on my own. I have had trouble with equalization, so I am focusing on that. Any advice or company welcome.

Welcome Michael. I hope I am still going strong at your age and that of forum staff member @Bill McIntyre, a spearfishernan of 82! You guys are inspiring.

My father-in-law climbed Crib Goch ridge - a airy alpine-style arete - on Mt. Snowden when he was 73 and I reckon there were at least 3 other 70+ year olds on the route that day. He also came sledging with us that winter! :D. At 82, he has slowed down a little, due to an artificial knee and ankle but still likes a good walk.

I'm no expert on equalization but keeping your sinuses and airways clear of mucus so you don't clog up your eustachian tubes with gunk, which can prevent equalisation and cause inflammation, swelling and pain, is a key consideration for me when spearfishing.

The freedivers have several techniques for equalising. They are much more methodical about such things than your typical spearo. There are at least 4 or 5 different ways that I am aware of, and I expect they have others beyond that. Surprised none have responded here yet.

Perhaps worth searching the forum, as equalising is an important and frequent topic for discussions, there are existing threads with detailed information on this.
