I've started doing some pool training the past month or so. I'm very much a beginner still. I've finally found a few friends to come to the pool with me and tonight I decided it was safe enough to try and push myself a little harder than I dare when alone. (well the life guards are always there). Anyway, I was able to go 50 meters dynamic no fins. At least I think it's 50 meters, basically down and back. I was pretty excited with myself. When I started 4-5 weeks ago I could barely get from one end to the other.

My question is this...Is 50 meters good progress for a newb? I know there's no exact way to compare, but if I can go 50 meters dnf, how deep could I expect to go once I get out to the reservoir if I was then using fins. (safely of course)

In the deep dive its all about how to manage equalization.
And thats a long story...

down to 15m is fine (15 down + 15 up mind you) put if you want to go deeper, its like Testis said.. all about equalization.

That is fine progress. It sounds like you are off to a good start. But the numbers don't really matter because as you increase in your breath holding abilities and your technique gets better, it will just keep improving and you will probably surprise yourself with your achievements.

However, I advise you not to depend on Pool Lifesavers to watch apnea because in apnea, every swim needs to be watched from beginning to end, and even sometime after surfacing. You may need to find others who are apnea training in your area. I cannot over stress the importance of this.

Thanks for the advice on safety. I am aware of the importance of increasing safety precautions, and have talked a few friends into coming to the pool with me now. I'm working to get them up to speed on all the aspects of beginner apnea, safety, and also getting them closer to my (measly) abilities for when we go to open water. Soon I hope to head out to the local reservoir. They have a sunken plane at 30 feet or so that I have as a goal this summer.

Hi guys..I am as well new to freediving in a way (in a way because many times in my life I have tried to go underwater a whole 25 mt pool from side to side..or competed with some friends who lasts longer without breathing) but i started a couple of months ago to train 90 minutes five days a week.

I have kept a record of almost every dive i have made so far.

My PBs are:

Dinamyc no fins: 40mt with 53 seconds - after 1 1/2 months training
Dinamyc with fins: 50mt with 40 seconds - today after 2 months training
Static wet: 1min 49 sec - after 2 months training
Static dry (laying down on bed totally relaxed): 3min 16 sec - after the second week of training.

I dont get at all these contractions everyone talks about but what I do feel is my heart pumping so hard when i feel a strong need of breathing

Does anyone has something similar to my times??...same time of training??..so we can compare the results of our trainings weekly or monthly or..who knows???

How the heck can i quote a piece of post Antoine made about pushing further past the enjoyment limit...sounds good...but seems like if u want to get better times u have to push hard on ur self so with enough practice that enjoyment limit gets farther and you can actually relax and enjoy for a longer period of time. (just my tought :) )

What about sharing some data of yourselves about BPM during apnea....?!

Oh..forgot to say that what i do prior to start an apnea is that i breath shallow/normally...for 1min 30sec and then i do 3 deep inhale exhale..having exhaled all the air in my lungs on the third exhalation...I take a very deep inhale + some extra "chunks" of air i push with my mouth like swallowing the air - I apollogize for my "intent" of speaking proper english

GL HF!

be very careful diving to that sunken plane. From my experience diving into "freshly" sunken ships there is a lot of stuff floating inside. You enter some compartment and opening closes behind you, barricaded with rubish (one example). Or if opening deck hatch something may violently pop up from underneath, I nearly got knocked out once like this. If that plane was sunken on purpose and made safe prior to sinking then it probably is a different story.
