Hello,

Here's a few pics of a gun I've been working on for extended range Aspetto Reef Sniping.

135cm Enclosed Track Internal Frame Rollergun
-135cm Tip to Butt
-Carbon Fibre Wrapped
-Full Enclosed Track
-Pigment Epoxy Camo
-Shown with Ulusub 75M Reel
-7mm Shaft
-16mm, 18mm, or 2Omm band. Shown with 16mm
-3 power positions

I haven't done any scientific testing, pool testing, video, etc. However, I have brought the gun Spearfishing a few times. What I've noticed is that the gun seems to shoot very fast and very far.. my range is at 3 wraps of line.. [3 x 1.25 x 2 = 7.5mtr]. There is zero recoil. None. There is as much recoil as there is on a TV Remote control when you change the channel..

Snapper beware.

Outstanding work mate, that pigment is sick. I like the two stop tabs on the boost end of the band.

Cheers, Don

Lovely work.

What is the core made from? Wood? What type?
What trigger mechanism do you use?
Any reason for fixing the shooting line straight to the spear rather than having a couple of wraps of mono first?

The gun looks absolutely fantastic, can you please give us more details - as much as possible because we love this type of work....

Hi,
Thanks Don, I had you in mind when I was building this.

Zapa,
I used a wood called Kayu Manis.. Sweet Wood as it smells sweet when you cut it, which is quite light, but quite stiff. Normally I would use Teak, but for this build I wanted to try a bunch of different things, including using a Light Wood inside a Carbon Wrap. However... there is a thick center stringer of Composite, and the Carbon Fiber Wrap which keeps things strong, and stiff.

That's a Neptonics Reef Mech. Good Stuff.

Shooting Line straight to the Spear, no reason, other than I didn't have any Crimps left at the house. I've directly tied Reel line to the shafts on my own guns for years without ever having a problem, but.. I made a gun for a friend and gave him a Kevlar shooting line and his line tangled in his bands causing a missed shot on a Giant Wahoo.. so, since then, I usually do use a Mono Shooting line.

FoxFish,
If you have a question let me know. I didn't document the build, There's a few things hidden in there you can't see.. one of them is the Composite Stringer.

Nice choice for the core wood, reminds me of my first Hibiscus wood hunt in the jungles of Raiatea, does it smell like a Cinnamon roll?:)
Cheers, Don

One nice thing about the different power settings is that in lowlight or murky conditions, like I enjoyed last night before dark in the Reefpound, you can set the gun on a lower power setting and not worry that you will shoot clean through a fish and hit a clump of reef 5 meters behind it..

Amazing colors on that fish....no worry's that first dark is Tiger Time where you are ?

Cheers, Don

Tiger Snapper aka Long Nosed Emporer/Spangled Emporer are what I was really going for.. but with 2Oft high waves this past week, they were just shadows on the edge of the murk. This Blue Trevally offered a cleaqr enough Silohoutte and wound up with lemon and garlic. I don't worry about Tiger Sharks too much in my local spot. We do have a bunch of pesky Spinner Sharks and Black and White Tips, and when the cooler water moves in so will the Whaler Sharks. But, I'm not too worried in this particular spot.

:cool:Very cool, very clever. Interesting to hear about the power & lack of recoil too.
