I joined this forum to get some advice from experienced guys like you. I got into spearfishing a couple years ago to shoot carp at our cabin(which is on a lake). I have a JBL mini-carbine right now. I got this gun because it was cheap and I was pretty inexperienced at the time. I want to step up to something a little bigger that will work in our lake against 2 foot carp and maybe some pikes. I want a gun that will be able to transition to saltwater(Hawaii next spring break). I wouldn't use the gun for anything serious just some fun in the summer. I just want a gun that will get the job done. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks!

Welcome to DB. We may not be expeirienced in saltwater spearfishing- But we can give you our honost opinions. I'm pretty convinced on going with thinner shaft guns like Euro-guns. I have a HammerHead and I took it down to Florida with me and really like how it did in the ocean. it was Neutral - in bouyancy (ocean). Sunk in Freshwater. Has a Nice 6.5mm shaft and is the most accurate gun out there. There are many guns to choose from. I would probably suggest a 90cm. A 90cm would work well in Freshwater and still do decent in really clear waters too.

Where do you spearfish Pike? Is it legal?

i have a AMI 2 from spetton usa its a really nice gun with a thin spear and works really great

A stout 90cm gun would do well for you. All the brands mentioned are good - might want to take a look at the base model Omer Cayman - it will allow you a second band (for Hawaii) and has a wonderful grip and trigger. A 90cm gun is pretty long - depending on your freshwater viz I think the cayman comes in an 80. A 75 is a bit short for Hawaii.

I just checked out the hammerhead evolution 08. it sounds like it'll do the job. the 90cm one fits what you guys suggested.

I also looked at the omer cayman 90 cm. sounds like a good aluminum gun. how hard is it to put more slings on?

any feed back is appreciated you guys have helped out alot so far.

It's easy - but you don't want to overpower a 6.5 shaft - I know Mark Labocetta at Omer has done some testing for optimum power for the cayman - if you want that one check with him. Also the new wong/aimrite is worth a look - great price and lifetime warranty.

Aimrite Venom

It's interesting to hear about the Hammerhead guns starting to take off. Do you mail order them direct from Hammerhead or are stores carrying them? What are the prices like? Anybody using them already. Anybody able to compare them to the SA railguns (Rob Allen, Rabitech, Orcas, Pelaj)? Pity they have to ship from Hawaii, that must be about as far as Europe from the mid-West - no US import tariff though.

I have a 90cm RA aluminium railgun with 6.6mm spear - probably quite similar. It's a very strong & versatile gun. Although, having recently been introduced to the joys of the super light Omer XXV, I will look more seriously at the carbon barrel models in future. I hear they are not currently importing the XXV into the US -- probably worried that folk would try to overpower the slim 25mm barrel. We're love 'em in the UK, they seem particularly well suited to our small fish. Already thinking of getting another one, 90cm. I would think the Cayman & HF/HF2 Omers would be interesting alternatives. Actually any of the models featured on Hammerhead's target comparison chart (RA, Picassos, Beuchats, Dessault, etc., etc.) would be worth considering. I personally would not place much value on their accuracy comparisons - if you do, you might also want to consider the Seatec Gabianno, which has a reputation for great accuracy (in Italian target competition according to Spaghetti) and robust construction.

Wongs & Riffes of course, for the minted.

Putting an additional band on the Cayman is easy. You should not need it though. I have a 90cm Cayman HF, I'v shot a 7mm spear clean through a 22lb carp. it has got some reach and some strength.

Whopperhead ordered his HH from the company, but I think there are a few resellers with them. I think I recall seeing one in a store in Florida. If your average vis is 10ft or so, consider a 75cm. I like my 90, but there are times when it's too much. My little 55cm Cayman Cave comes in handy.

i'm looking at the hammerhead evolution right now. where can I buy it online. Also, 9/16th or 5/8th bands? I have no idea. :(

I doubt you will notice a difference with either muzzles. The one with the wings just brings the band pull more inline with the muzzle. The other with the offset holes is there new muzzle I thnk:blackeye and there isnt really much of a difference between the two.

Its a great gun though!

I bought HammerHead muzzles for my Cayman's. I like the wings, it does seem to help make it a little more quiet. I'd get the HH muzzle if I were buying one. Both are quiet, both are good and will kill the fish.

Hey guys, I ordered my 80cm Rob Allen "Tuna" from jimdoe yesterday! No more dealing with that old piece they call a "JBL"! rofl
