Hi every body, I am new to the world of spear fishing, I have been diving for a few years now & I have just bought a spear gun, I live in Auckland New Zealand & would love any helpful tips on anything from sites, & skills I should try,
I would love to hear about others fishing experiences & would be happy to chat to others from any where in the world about diving & fishing,

hey there diverbug.....

I am also relatively new and started just like you, also asked for some advice..well I can tell you I have had some help from some guys here on the site and went diving with a experienced guy for a couple of times.

I think, you have been diving, scuba, that the most important thing is to get in shape, work on your bottom time, do some static breathhold training, cardio etc...,
(I do scuba as well and can tell you that most of them, with a lot of experience etc, do not make them great" spearfishers")

Work on your diving skills, buy a few DVD's and look how these guys use their fins, how they equalize, and go down...., how they use their guns..

Go diving without the gun, see how deep you can go, without any problems, how long you can stay under etc....

Read, on this site for example, about the way fish react, were you can find them, etc...

Get yourself some good equipment, a good gun, good suit and mask...try to figure out how much weight you need....
( I crashed on the bottom once with to much weight 20 meters deep )

And very important, learn and read about safety...

Anyways....started seriously 3 months ago, now I Icome home with my dinner, ok...I live a couple of minutes walking from the sea, and go dive 4/5 times a week....still much to learn but I am happy guy....

Let me know how you are doing, good luck....you are about to start with the coolest thing....

Greetings Mike

hi , i m not the best to give you answers but i ll try ,
1. you need a good mask
2. a comfotable diving suit for the climate area you dive ,with the apropriate mm
3. a snorkel ( trust me with out it your free diving search from the surface can be very hard - i learn the hard way-)
4. a spear gun (you can select it by the place you aim to dive and by the fishes you are going to hunt
5. four differrent kinds of heads -edges- for the spear gun so you can use the apropriate for each fish
6. fins there are many kinds you can buy fins specialy made for free dive or fins wich are softer in use but not giving big speed
7 a net for your hunting or
a nail carrier (a stainless steel nail with a small hole in the middle , from that hole pass a small line , -every time you get a fish you pass that nail through the eyes of the fish and when finnish you do the opposite do take them off -which on the other site has a shuckle tided on you and is better for medium fish to big or
a floating surface basket with diving flug attached where you can put anything you want to carry with you including fish you catchthis basket is tided with line on the hand that you dont use for the speargun
8. weights for making the diving easier (leaving the surface easier) but just as much as you need to leave the surface easy (as greendiver said also) , not more because swimming and diving can get very hard (the deeper you go the fewer you need) weights needs may vary according the dive suit you were
9. a good buddy
10 and finally good condition and practice

also smthng you might need, dont forget a nice dive light for cases that fish are in rock holes
