Hey im new to the diving/spearfishing world and want to start but need some help as far as the equipment. I know i need a mask, snorkle, wetsuit, fins, gloves, knife, and speargun. But im also wondering do i need a reel or how do i keep my spear? What does it attach to? Im a complete noob so dont take it to hard on me lol

The answer is.... it depends. The diving conditions, the species, and your experience level all play a factor. Generally, the idea is to start with something manageable and work your way up. Try to get a buddy if possible, and if you can, it can be beneficial to take a freediving class. It pays off when you're trained and comfortable in the water.

I'd recommend browsing the forums, and especially try to find posts by people from your general area. There's a ton of info, and it can be overwhelming, but it's worth it.

Thanks man.I got a few people that are starting with me. We are going to start out with polespears then get a feel of where we will be going alot then figure out the rest from there.

That's the way to do it. You'll figure out what you need as things progress.

You asked about spear attachment. They are often attached to the gun. You can attach the gun to a float if need be. Once again, it depends on the type of fish that you hunt.

Assuming you are diving near your home, no reel needed (if you ever decide to get a gun instead of a pole spear). Depth and vis are too limited. Those two are primary reasons why the pole spear works so well there.

I started out with a seahorse 5' pole spear with a 3 prong paralyzer tip, worked very well. I'm going to buy the extension for it and make it a 8', longer hitting range.
Then I bought a spear gun it was OK, sold it and bought a JBL 72" travel break down spear that comes with a 3 prong and a rock tip.
What I noticed, the fish get more spooked when you are pointing a gun at them rather a pole.
These are the fish in Mexico, I don't know about other places.
Break away tips you can add to the pole spear but you would only need it if you were going after something big.
Best thing to do is go on youtube and watch some spear videos and see what catches your eye.

Good luck

By the way, the way I hold the spear is by holding the band with my thumb and index finger and use the other three to hold the pole and release the pole.

The thing thats tough is that im not looking to spend a ton of money right off the bat. Ive priced a wetsuit, socks, fins, mask, snorkle, gloves, and pole spear with tip for around $470 and really cant afford to spend anymore than that right this second. Is that a good deal? Its from austinsdiving.com

I posted a response, but I guess you need permission to post a different dive suppler.
That place is to pricey for my blood. Private message me if you want and we will talk.

I can get all that for alot less.

Have you checked Scubastore? The prices can be good on there. It may worth it for comparison's sake.

470 sounds pricy to me. Fins $100, mask and snorkel, $90. booties $30, spear 70, gloves $10,wetsuit(3/2 surfer) $110, are ball park figures.

Wet suit can vary hugely depending on quality. Unless you want to spear in winter and early spring, a 3/2 surfer suit will do for your area, relatively cheap.

Your at $410, I go for deals, there is not a big demand for dive gear right now, some of the stores are almost giving the stuff away for half price.

no question, you can find deals if you look. I was considering more normal price for reasonably good gear.

Other ways you can save: buy full foot freediving fins and you don't need booties for most of the year. nylon socks work fine for chaff protection. Buy cheap hardware store gloves (work fine) or go without. We dove no gloves or booties for years before we figured it out. For shallow water, you don't need a low volume mask, there are some very cheap masks out there that will do fine, just get one with a black skirt that fits good and has good field of view. Don't skimp on the snorkel.

True that!

Ok thanks man. If anybody has anymore input that could help me out please feel free to thanks

Most importantly, check up on your states regulations on what fish you can and can't catch and try to memorize the minimum size limits for different fish. Make sure you have all your fishing licenses that your state and zone requires (e.g. Southern California requires a fishing license plus a salt water addition~$50) This honestly is the most important thing to have. Fishing without one or catching fish that are illegal due to size or on a no catch list will lead to a very hefty fine.
