Ok so I am starting up spearfishing this year and as I am more of a traditionalist in anything I do I will be hunting with a pole spear. The question I have is more of me asking for tips and tricks to pole spearing. Thank you

What type of spear are you getting, they come in all types of material, from fibreglass, through to metal and carbon fibre. They seem to break into two camps, the light and the heavy. Both can be fast but the heavy spear needs more power to reach the same speed of a lighter spear, which means a more powerful draw, either through a larger rubber or a longer draw. Before getting the spear be realistic with what fish you will be after and how strong you are. Grip assisting devices can help but one of the great things about pole spears is their simplicity and the "primal" feeling that they provide. A lighter spear, with a lower draw weight is more realistic for UK fishing. I bought a Ray Odor and its great, but its way too much for the fish I am likely to get, as to get it to speed, the draw weight is high. I haven't measured it but my arm tells me it is

The spear is a 3 pc. national divers 6' fiberglass spear its breaks down into 3 pieces traveling as my job requires me to go all over the
U.S., Mexico, and Canada. I am not looking to spear anything monsterous I feel anything under 20 lbs. would be sufficient.
