Hey all, I've pretty much grown up in the water, and I've just recently decided to take up spearfishing. I have all the gear (I use to be into freediving in highschool), and I have a spear. The biggest issue I'm running into is fish identification. I'm not too sure which fish I can eat, and which ones I can't. I've been looking for a list of fish on google, but I've come up short handed. I'm currently spearfishing in Japan, and since I'm new to the sport, I stay on the reefs in shallow water (no deeper than 20-40 feet). I've done a lot of pole fishing, so I'm aware of the more deep water fish, but not too sure about around coral reefs. So far I've seen some grouper and rockfish, but those are the only ones I know I can eat!

You could buy a book or look on-line for references. I found a fold-out, plastic-laminated UK Sea Fish Identification chart somewhere several years ago (probably from an angling store, or possibly an on-line angling supplier or Amazon). It is quite good. It is not exactly to scale but larger fish are shown large, medium fish are shown medium size and small fish are small - but there is a guide size in metres next to each fish...although some of the sizes are a tad optimistic :D. It is 2 sided and both sides are covered with images of different fish - so a lot of different fish are shown.
