Just signed up. One of my younger co-workers got a small boat and another wants to freedive (10-15 ft) so I figure I'm not that old that I can't join them and see whats under water.

One of my co-workers at Hughes Aircraft took me under his wing and taught me how to build a polespear, shoot fish, grab bugs and pry off abalone. That was fun times, especially opening lobster night kicking back to shore with the stars overhead. That was 20 years ago.

Since then family, kids and moving to SD changed all that and I hav'nt dove for fish since. Tho I've done a few dives on vacation and off the shore just to remember what to do.

So I got my old Pole spear fixed up and made a sling so I'm anxious to try it out, tho I might lose the shafts first time out.

Thats it.

Hi Rockbus, welcome to db.
Night diving for lobster sound like fun! Would that still be legal now?
Let us know how you get on with the pole spear & ask away any questions you might have.

In socal lobster season started last weekend. I think it goes on till Feb next year. The pole spear just needed new rubber. It was made up of a six foot length of thick electrical conduit, with three SS prongs epoxyed in the end sharped with a ginder. Very getto. Works great but I have to be carefull cause there are no barbs so once I stick the fish I got to drive it to the bottom so I could run the stringer through the fish. Not a problem with a tank but freediving will be an adventure.

I made up a hawiian sling with PVC for the handle and 5/16x48 inch shaft. Looks like it will work but I need to put a barb on it and some kind of line so I can retrieve it.

Thanks for the reply.
