Hi everyone. I'm new here and started spearing in January. I got 1 parrot fish +- 2kgs/ 4lbs. I'm going again this December and might be going to a reef or otherwise just spearing off the beach. Any tips on reef spearing, open water spearing and shore diving? Any comments appreciated. I'm completely a newby and hooked on it!

Thanks

A 14 yo kid from Mozambique that is hooked on spearfishing??

WELCOME! You are very lucky to have the waters that you have there!

Make sure to spearfish with a buddy, use a float line so you can spot each other, use 1 gun for 2 ppl, so that you are always being carefully watched / safetied, beware of large predators out there and have FUN!

Thanx apneaaddict for quick reply. Yeah I'm lucky but here in Maputo there aren't any diving spots and the water is peasoup.

The nearest spearing place is Inhaca island, 1hr 45 min boat ride or 3 hour ferry ride.

I was lucky to have stoned my first fish! There was a school of pickhandle barracuda where I was but they were just out of my gun's range. :-(

Hi Moz,
Be really careful trying to spear barracuda. We recently had a guy here in Australia with severe damage to his arm (resulting in multiple surgery) from spearing this species. If you don't get a kill shot first up, get the hell out of there or they'll go for you. Baddest fish in the sea! Get on Adreno.com.au blog to see for yourself.

Thanks floatingbeatle. I'll keep that in mind. I've read about some guys badly injured. I was close to shore and thought i'd take a far off shot. Too far though. THanks

Hello MozSpearer. Still diving? I'm from Maputo as well. Started freediving last month.
