Hey all, I just moved to Okinawa a few months ago and I spend most of my free time at the beach in the water taking photos or hunting. Spearguns are illegal here so it's polespears for me.

Welcome from Texas! Let's see some of your photos!

nice pics, good to see some healthy coral.

Just curious, do they allow Hawaiian slings? If they do, you can much more than double your range over a pole gun.

They do allow a hawaiian sling here. However, I haven't really been able to find any place that sells them here, and very few places online. Any suggestions for places in the states that sell them?

Not sure where you could get what you need at a reasonable shipping price. Google Austins Dive Shop in Miami and look through their stuff. What you want is a simple wood cylinder stock,3 feet of amber rubber tubing, small hole, approximately 1/2 inch diameter, notch for the spear that fits on the rubber tubing, and a 5 ft spring steel shaft with single flopper. Make it up to your arm strength. If you are a big strong guy, larger diameter tubing will work and give more range. Its all pretty cheap if you can solve the shipping issue. As an alternative, if you have good woodworking tools, you can make your own. Then all you need is a spear and the tubing.

Fair warning, using a sling effectively takes a bit more practice than a pole gun. Slings work best for fish that orient to the bottom. Sufficiently large pelagics tend to swim off with the spear if the shot is not very well placed.
